They were strong but that doesn't mean you weren't fodder. They have natural battle prowess but got silenced by two people who weren't in their prime. Either the Uchiha Clan aren't as powerful as they used to be, or Itachi/Obito's duo > Uchiha Clan.

It wasn't an ambush, it was an assassination plot.

Not every Uchiha is talented. The Sharingan helps though.

The manga literally said the Uchiha clan was strong enough to successfully take down the leaf if the coup happened. So a clan being able to take out the leaf village is anything but fodder.

Itachi and Tobi are that powerful, Tobi already took on the village on his own and he left heavier casualties than Oro's sound village working with the sand village did.

Pretty sure it was said that it would merely lead to other countries taking advantage of the situation and attacking the Leaf. If the Uchiha were so powerful, they wouldn't have been killed by two kids. There were plenty of powerful shinobi in the Leaf at that point. In fact, I think Danzo pretty much black mailed Itachi by saying he either kill the Uchiha and let Sasuke live or have the Uchiha attempt the coup and have all of them die including Sasuke.

1-To be fair Konoha already knew about the Sand Sound attack and Obito's came as a surprise.

2-Danzo was sure that the Uchiha clan would be annihilated either way and Obito suggested that as a result of their attempted coup Konoha might get attacked by other villages starting the 4th great shinobi war. Though, they deserve credit for being dangerous enough to heavily weaken Konoha even if they'd have failed in the end.

Kamui is such a spontaneous and odd ability that I'm not surprised the whole Police Force was taken down by it. Given it's length of 5 minutes, it was enough time for Obito to kill more than half of the militant Uchiha's. Itachi handled the civilians and it was even stated that he wasn't strong enough to take on all of the Police Force Members which shows that the Sharingan in numbers is still a very scary thing.

Combine Obito's other abilities with Kamui and he's virtually unstoppable and unpredictable. The Uchiha weren't fodder and all share the same potential outside of Indra's reincarnations.
