Personally, Uchiha weren't traitors of any kind. And remember what Tobirama said.. Uchiha clan was one of the most loyal clans of the village. I personally believe the incident was caused by misunderstanding (since understanding each other plays a huge role in the story).

The Asura clearly represents violence and anger, and Itachi chose that when he slaughtered his entire family.

The Village had become opposite of what Hashirama intended.. Uchiha were going to reform the village.. they were in the end one of the most loyal clans of the village.
