Alright this is a random thread, as I came up with a memory last night, so bear with me..
I remember hearing/reading from the first chapters of Naruto, that the Sharingans withing Uchiha would be limited, thus not everyone would be born with the affinity to gain a sharingan.
This creates a bottle neck effect, of all uchihas being OP and amazing.. and few more conditions.. bear with me.
So, you need to be born with the affinity of sharingan, to gain it. you must protect your best friend to awaken it (as seen in Sasukes and Obitos case) itachi is a mystery still so it might not be as simple as that..
It is stated, that not everyone has the power to gain MS, so it creates another bottle neck effect. As only limited ammount of people have sharingans to begin with. This means it's very rare even among the sharingan users to gain MS, thus everyone with MS are highly respected and well remembered.
To gain MS, in my opinion, is much more complicated than just killing your best friend. Sasuke got his MS after he basicly killed his brother, and hearing the story of Itachis pain. Kakashi is still a complete mystery (?when Obito died?). Itachi, I think gained MS after killing his own parents [or when he helped Shishui with his plan of dissapearing (death)], meaning, all you need, is a huge distress, someone very close to you dying. and that creates a strain, that activates MS.
The strain created from that pain, makes your MS eye strain, and making your eyes "incomplete" and on top of that you know straining your eyes to much makes you lose your sight.
To gain EMS, you must have a sibling, with both the affinity of sharingan, and MS to be able to gain EMS, and those couples are rare! we only know of two, in the entire clan history! Sasuke and Itachi, and Izuna? and Madara.
Alright, thats what I think of the sharingans.. if anyone has something to add, or if i did something wrong, do correct me.
