At the time, the only choices were A) Kill the clan, or B) Let the coup de etat take place. The 3rd admitted he should've tried harder, and the 4th regrets dying before being able to do anything. I honestly can't believe you. I can understand why someone would think Danzo did for his extremism and for personal gain, but Itachi?! Never. Itachi did it for something called the big picture, for Konoha. While it's debatable Danzo did it purely for Konoha, Itachi doing it for Konoha is not debatable.

No Itachi doing it because he was puppet. Itachi is not that different from sasuke he was painted in the colors by someone who took advantage of him early. For Itachi he was manipulate by the 3rd and danzo into doing what they desire. The best manipluations are when the manipulated belive that they acting on their own. There where other ways of resolving this but danzo wanted them gone period and he was using itachi to do it. i think he got rid of Shushi because their would have been complications if he was involved with the massacre. No ne else found it weird that speak of shushi so high and that he was so loyal to the village but not invole in that night, I don't even think he was aware that was coming.

Fugaku looking for war or not is irrelevant, he would have certainly had one. Hiruzen, Danzo, Shisui, and Itachi all realized this.

There is a huge difference between what happened to the Uchiha and Stalin's gulags lol. The Uchiha were the military police, Stalin's victims were victims because of his paranoia and sadism. Gulag inmates literally worked to death in the bitter cold of Siberia. The Uchiha were plotting a coup, most Gulag prisoners were not. Think before you create a metaphor like that.
