It's quite ironic when Sasuke haters call Sasuke fans retarded (Admittedly, more than half of them can be retarded at times), but don't seem to notice that their level of intelligence isn't any higher and they are just as childish. Revenge is a noble act. It's today's bureaucratic system that has warped its name. If anyone does witness such an atrocity that Sasuke did, they would only not act if they are weak and powerless or don't value their family. I cannot imagine any other reason. That's what makes Sasuke interesting and realistic - he's that man who has the power to exact justice. I never felt a shred of sympathy for Itachi when he dropped to the ground in agony, and died. He deserved his pitiful fate a million times over.

The after-effects of that victory on Sasuke's face when he stood over his corpse and when he woke up in the den ... the best moments in the entire manga. It showed the emptiness Sasuke felt through the realization that despite killing Itachi, his clan was gone. Kishimoto drew the broken stoic facade we always saw plastered on Sasuke's face beautifully. These are the only few times I imagined the manga touched a level of greatness.

The moment of Sasuke's madness with the surge of MS's power flowing through him, leaving him breathlessly murderous were brilliant. His descent to madness ... was a thing of genius, when he stabbed Karin as well, knowingly that he will not get another chance to finish off the man responsible for his Clan's demise. It's odd that no one on this forum has even noticed that Sasuke experienced a Classic fall - not from greatness but from the pedestal of normalcy - through Hamartia, which would be Itachi's love for him.

If anyone here even remotely believes that any character even comes close to Sasuke in terms of verisimilitude, literary value, metaphoric representation of a troubled man, personification of honour, degeneration of sanity, one-minded nearly mad pursuit of a goal, then they are kidding themselves and have no knowledge of decent Literature. I would say this without taking a word of it back. If you talk of 'Good Writing and Characterization' in Naruto and willingly leave Sasuke out, then you have no right to forward an opinion on this, and that would be ... a fact, folks!
