Ok so I'm basically mixing a theory on the Elder Son's Dojutsu, how it then formed into the Sharingan and Byakugan, how this estabilishes the relationship between Hyuga and Uchiha, and possible outcomes this could bring in the future of the manga!
First off all the Sage had the Rinnegan
The Sage then defeated and absorbed the Juubi, and after this he had the Elder Son and Younger Son. At first, the Elder Son's eyes were simply the typical White/Purple Dojutsu.
Now I believe this pure version of the Elder Son's Dojutsu simply gave the Elder Son the abilies of the Byakugan, but in addition allowed him to see and manipulate Natural Energy....thus a psuedo Sage Mode. Also, it may allow the user to see the chakra affinity of their opponent(s) (Red-Katon, Brown-Doton, Yellow-Raiton, Green-Fuuton, Dark Blue-Suiton, regular lightish blue-regular jutsu).
However, the Juubi's corrupt chakra/influence was secretly burried deep within the Elder Son (simply repressed). Tobirama has said that the power and awakening of the Sharingan's forms comes from love that corrupts into deep hatred. Now obviously this had to come from something. What better place to come from than that of their ancester: The Elder Son.
Upon the Sage Of Six Paths' Death, the Younger Son was chosen to succeed. The combination of his beloved father's death, and not being chosen to succeed his father (as this must have made him feel like a failure to his father) drove his love into hate. The Juubi's corrupted influence then changed the Elder Son's Dojutsu: replacing the pure White/Lavender color into the standard Sharingan Red *Note the Red coloration of the Elder Son's Eyes (on the right)*
Upon the Elder Son's eyes taking in the Juubi's corruption. He may have, in addition to his previous abilities, gained the powers of the Uchiha (Susanoo, Amaterasu, and Tsukiyomi)
So now, the Elder Son himself had children as we know for a fact some of his descendants eventually formed the Uchiha clan. This is also where multiple possibilities come into play. I will now branch off the Hyuga-Uchiha relationship into two possible theories. Please note that the primary difference between the two theories revolves around the time of the Clans' forming more than anything.
One way the Byakugan and Sharingan could have derived from the Elder Son could come from he himself having two sons. The First Born Son was born with the Byakugan which represented the initial purity and love the Elder Son once had.
The Second Born Son was born with the Sharingan which represents the hatred and Juubi's corrupted influence.
The descenants of these brothers then forming the Hyuga and Uchiha clans. Due to Kakashi's strong point of saying that the Hyuga were the oldest clan in Konoha, it is likely that during the clan wars, the Hyuga were allies to the Uchiha, and with the forming of Konoha the Hyuga automatically joined....having formed as a clan before the Uchiha and plausibly the Senju, they are in fact the oldest clan.

Descendants is an extremely vague word that is open to interpretation. With this logic, this could mean there was any time from a few years to decades between the Sons of the Sage of Six Paths, and the forming of the clans. If there were many years between the Sons and their Clans forming, this means there is a possibility for the off branching of these bloodlines.
So if the Hyuga and Uchiha both come from the Elder Son, this is how it is possible. At some point along the line of descent, there was a branch off from the Elder Son's direct descent. For Example, say a female descedant marries some man, and then their child (who is also female), marries yet another man...this off branching dilutes the direct blood line which could have resulted from a mutation of the Elder Son's Dojutsu into the Byakugan. The less direct descent possibly leading to less influence from the Juubi's corruption, and as such the eye purified into the Byakugan.
The Uchiha on the other hand, stayed more direct, either from direct male ancestors, or simply preventing a dilution of the bloodline. With the Pride the Uchiha have, it would make sense that they would stick to this code. With a continued close bloodline, the Juubi's corruption manifested more strongly, and eventually gave birth to the Sharingan.
In addition to branching bloodlines, this is also another logical way in which the Hyuga could have formed earlier. With an unknown gap between the Elder Son and the Uchiha forming, there is a plausibility of the Hyuga forming first. Due to their common ancestrial herritage, it is logical that they had been in alliance with the Uchiha during the warring clan period. With Konoha being formed, the allies of the Uchiha and Senju naturally joined up, and thus...the Hyuga stand as the oldes clan in Konoha.

With this being said...it may be that both versions of this eye (the pure version and the corrupted version) can be awakened. In addition, we have two candidates capable of getting both versions: Hinata and Sasuke
If the Origional version of the Elder Son's Dojutsu represented the Purity the Elder Son once had, Hinata would be a perfect candidate. Hinata is a genuinely gentle person, and like Itachi, pretty much a pacifist. This sense of purity instead of a desire for power (which many of the Hyuga Clan had origionally seemed to value: Especially Hiashi), it may be the requirement needed to advance the Byakugan.
In addition, by giving Hinata access and use of Natural Energy as well as seeing elemental natures, this provides valuable uses for the current situation.
1. By adding it to her Gentle Fist style, her attacks become far stronger: a finally true reason that CQB against a Hyuga is suicide.
2. By seeing the chakra affinity a Shinobi has, Hinata would be able to shout out incomming styles allowing advantageous affinities to counter attack...effective against Madara's large scale jutsu!
3. The Juubi is a collective mass of Natural Energy, with the ability to see and manipulate Natural Energy, she may be able to either herself or to direct others into locating a weak point on the Juubi, or a way to seal it.
With all the power Naruto has ammased...Sasuke has been left hanging back, and POSSIBLY in need of a power up (naturally we haven't seen the full power of EMS...so he may not even need it).
Sasuke is a man of Pride...just look how far he's gone for his clan. Naturally this means he'd never take another's DNA for his own advance...no way would he dilute his Uchiha blood. So the next best thing is to advance the EMS Sharingan to a whole New level: Elder Son's Courrupted Eyes.
This way, Sasuke has full access to his origional EMS powers, but also has a Sage Mode to use and defend himself with, and would be able to foresee Naruto's elemental attacks...though they are rather obvious. He also is 100% capable of surpassing Madara (NOT EDO MADARA) just as Naruto is destined to surpass Hashirama (if he hasn't already).
