All it has added was more panels being taken up. Kishimoto was a great writer when he had 11 characters, but now with the 50 plus, its likely you'll never see some again.

The only kages that needed to live is gaara, to meet shukaku

I agree. Outside of summoning Katsuya and restoring the SA chakra, nothing much has been done. The 4 of them together couldn't beat the budha statue leaving hiruzen to contend with it.

All the 5 kages should've died except maybe Gaara due to his importance to the plot. Kages look like fodders for a while now so the're not needed, and maybe it would make the war look at least a bit like real war. with not only Neji dying.
