I think that KKGs are a kind of sleeping chakra beasts.
Chakra contains Will, which have 2 sides (Outer and Inner selves). I think that KKGs was created by people who reached perfection (unifying their outer and inner selves) by creating stable, firm and solid chakra (comparable to that of Bijuus) and naming it one way or another (to split it from creator). So true nature of KKGs is identical to Bijuus and their full power may be identical as well. So 'awakening' may be common potential for KKG users - not exclusive for Sharingan and by reaching 'perfection' bloodline user may learn true name and gain ability to bring-out true form of his power (reaching the level of power between full Kyubi and current Obito).
This theory is based on Kaguya's story (infected by Shinju's chakra and power), Kyubi's mark on Naruto, Kinkaku, Ginkaku, Naruto's own mark on entire alliance and special value that was given to the names of Bijuus (Juubi seems to be revived, but individual Wills of Bijuus still remain within Obito).
For example True form of byakugan might be some sort of white tiger and by awakening it user may get white hairs, stronger body, larger chakra and ability to see souls and/or future. Or it might be some kind of gorgon so user would get snake-hairs, stronger body, larger chakra and ability to turn opponents into stone statue (by overloading them with natural energy).
