Wasn't that because of the density of the gold sand counter acting the oil? If Gaara doesn't have that, I don't see how he wins. But if he does, sure.
Well sure, that was how Gaara won. But at that point in the battle he had other ways he could win. The only issue here is Joki Boy since that was what was preventing the Mizukage from getting sealed, but after exploding once Gaara can quickly seal Gengetsu before JB explodes again, or seperate the two of them and airlift Gengetsu into the sky where JB can't reach him. I explained my opinion better in this thread

Gaara still wins even without gold dust. The reason why Gaara had such a hard time was because he had to protect fodders which made him waste chakra and focus his attention on them. Bare in mind he had already used quite a bit in previous battles against his father and Mu. Then there is the fact that wide scale attacks such as sand tsunamis and quick sand couldn't be used because fodders were everywhere on the battlefield.

Gaara high difficulty in scenario one. Mid difficulty in scenario two assuming that location is a desert which I forgot.

^Gaara only protected the fodders once with his mother shield.

Anyways, I think Trollkage wins. as long as Jōki Bōi is around, Gaara can't seal him, and Jōki Bōi's cool down time isn't large enough where Gaara would find enough time to make a large sealing medium like the sand pyramid to bypass Trollkage's hydrification before the clone removes all of the tags. That airlift strategy is countered by Hydrification.

There was a lot of off panel fighting as well. There is also the fact that he had to watch for their safety making it harder for him to keep up with Joki Boy's speed. What about burying the 2nd Mizukage underground? Sure Joki Boi is fast but the real 2nd Mizukage can't avoid Gaara's sand.

Hydrification renders that null. His sand can't hurt him. That giant sand pyramid is actually an extension of that underground crushing tech Gaara used against Kimimaro. A weakened Trollkage wasn't affected by that.

The point is that the 2nd Mizukage can't escape and he'll eventually suffocate to death or run out of chakra.

Trollkage will get himself out of there. The oil seeps in through the sand and gives him more room to work with to dig out of that space. Liquefaction is effortless to Hōzukis. More sand countered Trollkage's hydrification only in the sense that it gave Gaara more time to seal him. We saw that Trollkage actually dug himself to the top of the pyramid after the sealing tags were removed.

I didn't realize he could dig through sand and for whatever reason forgot about oil being a good counter to sand. I guess Trollkage can win scenario one with mid difficulty and scenario two with high difficulty.
