This time I thought I’d try and tackle a difficult subject, transmigration and how it operates for the protagonists. I’ll try and work backwards through what we know about the subject and then point out some interesting possibilities regarding the origins of certain nondescript figures within the story. Once again if you don’t mind playing the speculation game and or potentially spoiling the manga for yourself then read on.

The starting point for me that I wanted to revisit is the process whereby Naruto inherited some of the Sage of the Six Paths’ power. A lot of us were predicting before it happened that as soon as Naruto managed to get hold of the chakra from the 9 tailed beasts, he would get to meet the Sage. Sure enough Naruto did get to meet the Sage but I’ve been wondering whether he was able to do so for the reasons that we thought. I think it might be time to abandon the Bijuu theory for Naruto becoming the new sage and replace it with something different.

Why abandon the old theory about the 9 tailed beasts at all?. Well you never really abandon a theory. If it doesn’t fit with the story then you adapt or replace parts of it until it does explain the story. The problem for me with the old theory about the tailed beasts is that it does not address why Sasuke too was able to meet the Sage and also received a power up. What I think needs to be taken account of is the process of transmigration and I think that this may explain more of what Naruto and Sasuke are fighting with as well as what they are fighting for.

Transmigration (what we know)
Transmigration is just another term for what is more commonly referred to as reincarnation. It is a belief shared by many in the world that replaces ideas of heaven and hell. My understanding of it is that you are born, live and die and repeat the process again and again until you break the cycle by transcending the mortal coil. This is essentially what the Sage seems to have done. He is dead but he continues to live on as pure chakra, revisiting his sons in their new incarnations:

Within the story there are only a very few characters who are acknowledged to transmigrate rather than simply die. The two main ones are Indra and Asura, the sons of the Sage of Six Paths Hagoromo. Their bodies are gone but their Chakra moves into new generations:

Naruto and Sasuke are the current generation’s hosts to Indra and Asura and the previous generation was Hashirama and Madara:

We know a little about Indra and Asura. They were raised by Hagoromo until he needed to choose an heir. He chose Asura to carry forward his message about Ninshuu and this prompted a war between the two sons.

Before the war was settled, the Sage died and the sons entered a cycle of death and rebirth continuing their struggle. Indra and his heirs the Uchiha fought on one side while Asura and his heirs the Senju fought on the other. The original rivalry was never settled:

This struggle was engineered by BZ and got in the way of the brothers learning the message that their father wanted to instill in them… how to co-operate:

The Sage did not transmigrate into another living soul. He left the mortal world but kept a watchful eye on his sons as they moved from body to body:
NB the mysterious RInnegan watching:

The Sage has no physical presence but depending on the situation his powers and his presence can take shape – whether by Madara taking a bite out of Hashirama and forcing Hashirama’s Asura chakra to mix with his own Indra chakra - in order to recreate the Rinnegan:

…or by Hashirama mixing his chakra with Madara’s in an effort to revive his former friend and thereby summoning the Sage:

Theory (Indra and Asura)
My hypothesis is that the Sons’ chakra can likewise be stolen and transferred to new hosts and does not simply remain with the current hosts as they continue their struggle. I think that the trigger for both Sasuke and Naruto to meet the sage was that they came into contact with fresh influxes of Indra and Asura’s chakra. Naruto completing a collection of some of the chakra from all 9 bijuu would explain Naruto getting to meet the Sage but not Sasuke. That makes me think that both Naruto and Sasuke received something else that triggered their audience with the Sage. These deliveries came from Obito and Kabuto:

So what was the trigger? I think that the trigger might have been something to do with White Zetsu, or at least two rather unique White Zetsus…these guys:

We know that White Zetsus are the remains of those who have formerly been captured in Infinite Tsukuyomi:

Who are these two unique Zetsus? Failed experiments to clone Hashirama? No, I think these two are unique because they are the digested remains of the bodies of Indra and Asura.

Why…

First notice the Staff that Obito wields when he becomes Jinchuuriki to the Juubi:

This is the Staff that should belong to hosts of Asura. It represents only half of the Sage’s legacy, that inherited by his younger son whose banner corresponded to the Sun:

Note that Madara (who was host to Indra – represented by the Moon) gets the corresponding Moon Staff:

I do not think that Obito was a host to a transmigrant. Instead I think that Naruto was effectively revived by an influx of Asura chakra that Obito happened to be carrying. Where did Obito get this Chakra from – I think that that has something to do with how Madara saved Obito’s life. Madara fused Obito together with parts from a White Zetsu to replace those body parts crushed under a rock:

Notice that the Arm and face from the Zetsu on the Left are missing pieces of its arm and face – corresponding to Obito’s wounds. I think this White Zetsu was once Asura:

What about Sasuke? I think that Kabuto might have gotten his hands on some of Spiral Zetsu before he was Izanami’d by Itachi. Kabuto trades with Tobi for material to experiment on when allying himself to the Moon’s eye plan. Kabuto might have been persuaded by Itachi’s Izanami technique to revive Sasuke with some of this prize:

Spiral Zetsu I think is the remains of Indra. Spiral Zetsu is composed of one Spiral emanating out of the Spiral’s Right Eye. Sasuke is the host to Indra’s transmigrating chakra but he has only inherited the Left Eye. I think that the rest of Indra’s chakra was digested by the Juubi before it had a chance to transmigrate. The Spiral is the design of Indra’s activated (mangekyou or higher) dojutsu as was revealed here (NB its hard to make out but trust me, people used to refer to him as spiral eyes before we learned of Indra’s name):

Sasuke only has one Rinnegan:

I think Spiral might effectively be the remains of Indra not passed to Sasuke

The other Zetsu likewise shares similar characteristics with Asura but they are less obvious. He has distinctive marks on his remaining shoulder and head that resemble a white putty form of the flame cloak of Asura (no other WZ seem to have these features):

Events / Conclusion
How would Indra and Asura have been captured by the Juubi? Well there have been two Juubi. The first was the big Juubi that Hagoromo and Hamura sealed and that was in part their mother Kaguya. The Second Juubi is the one that Hagoromo turned into before he died. On his deathbed the Sage started to lose control of the chakra that was sealed inside him. His last act was to release the Juubi’s chakra sealed inside him and that he had split into the 9 Bijuu… and then send his body to the moon (the Gedo Mazo):
Sealed original Juubi chakra inside him

Split Juubi chakra into 9 pieces, released them and then sent his body to the moon

Which Madara was able to recover when he fused his Indra Chakra with Hashirama’s Asura chakra:

There is one notable feature that is retained by the Gedo Mazo and even passed on to one of the Bijuu… the beard:
Hagoromo

Gedo Mazo

Gyuki (the Hachibi)

The Gedo Mazo is relatively small. If the Original Juubi’s shell is still contained within the Moon then I think that that is a good guess as to where the reborn Kaguya under the control of BZ took Naruto and the Gang in order to complete the revival of BZ’s mother – who was made up not just of Kaguya but the Shinju as well:
BZ Goal - My mother’s Revival

The Juubi – it wasn’t just the Shinju, my mother was part of it as well

Original Juubi:

Hagoromo Juubi (half the chakra …half the size) fought by Asura (?… he's only carrying the Sun Staff whereas Hagoromo carries the combined Sun and Moon Staff)

Before he died I think that Asura and Indra met their father, were confronted by him turning into a new Juubi and were then defeated because they had been unable to co-operate.
Sons meeting father on his deathbed

Also note that when the Sage talks about his sons deaths he does not talk about them dying of old age – instead he says that their bodies were destroyed:

I think that their bodies were turned into early White Zetsus and that only a small part of their Chakra was able to escape. Hence why Naruto needs the Kyuubi chakra to form this:

…whereas Asura could do this without any Bijuu:

and why Sasuke has one Rinnegan:

but Indra had two spiral eyes:

Now that Indra and Asura know that they were set against each other by BZ they should be free to fulfil their father's wish that they learn to co-operate and then eventually they might all be free to move on… just the small matter of the Juubi and the Demon to sort out first.

"in other words, the Juubi and Madara and Hashirama's …no The Kyuubi and Indra and Asura's Chakra finally mixed together and that's why I could come out"

Not a big development but it fits with the theory.

One other thing has been bothering me lately. Every fodder white zetsu looks like Asura or Obito rather than Hashirama. That's in spite of White Zetsu supposedly being clones of Hashirama.

Face Comparison
Asura

Obito

WZ

Genetic tests
WZ are cloned from Hashirama

Madara might have been trying to clone Hashirama but it would make sense that the results all ended up looking like Asura if he started by adapting the processed body of Asura.

Was this Asura fighting his father after he'd turned into a second Juubi (the figure fighting only has the sun end to his staff, Hagoromo should have had both ends)?
