I think ShikaTemi fits with Shikamaru's personality. They like and respect each other, Temari even stated she thought Shikamaru would make a good hokage. When she did come from Suno, you usually do see them together, as if they sought each other out. It was an easy friendship, which means Shikamaru did not have to work too hard at it, which fits right in with his personality.

As for Naruhina, while they were not romantically involved from Naruto's standpoint, does not mean there was nothing between them. Outside of Sakura, who is on the same team, you would be hard pressed to find Naruto having interactions with any females other than Tsunade and Hinata. Naruto freely admits to Minato that he's only 17 and there isn't much he knows about girls.

If you think about it he hasn't had much time to think about things like that. He went from Jiraiya's death, to sage training, to the Pain Invasion, the kage summit with Sakura's confession, Obito declaring war, war prep, training with Bee and joining the war. There was not a lot of time for him to absorb either Sakura's fake confession of Hinata's true confession. I think Naruto held onto his crush for Sakura, because they were on the same team, because Sasuke could not reciprocate and it was easier than just letting go of those feelings. Without Sasuke around he was still able to have a slight hope because she had needed him at times, and she did come to respect and admire him and his dream to become hokage. Between her confession and their other interactions, his lack of experience, he probably thought she was sending him mixed signals. Sometimes hope is hard to let go of.

I think Kishi will highlight Naruto's feeling for Hinata through flashback. Through the chunin exams, the Pain arc and the war arc, he did come to respect and admire her. He just never thought of her romantically because he did have a crush on Sakura and he's Naruto, he never over thinks anything. He is the type of person who has to be hit over the head with an idea occasionally. Sometimes you don't realize how important someone is to you until they are gone. Then you realize that person has always been there for you, in the background, but always when you needed them most, that you kind of took their love and support for granted without realizing it.

I think Naruto will have a light bulb moment and realize why didn't he ever think of this sooner? Not that those feelings were never there, just that he never considered the possibility of them. He's ready to put his childhood dreams to rest and concentrate on the rest of his life. That does not make Hinata the consolation prize. That makes her his chance at his first adult romance.

Interview with Kishimoto-sensei about the movie

"I decided quite a while ago to go with Hinata.
There was a time when I was on the fence about going with Sakura, but after coming this far and just having Sakura switch over to loving Naruto would make her kind of a terrible woman.
Anyway, Sakura really has always just been wholeheartedly about Sasuke.”

oh my...you did it again Kishimoto...

bye bye narusaku!!!
