We'll just start over if that's alright with you.
Kakuzu looks at the shinobi before him staring into the distance...in the wrong direction.

Be more attentive to your surroundings, I could have been an enemy ninja. Anyway, tell me what you already know of the illusionary arts.

Sure thing. (I'll try not to copy my last work)

Jakai waits for his sensei while staring off into the distance. Unexpectedly, he hears a voice from behind him. Be more attentive to your surroundings, I could have been an enemy ninja. Anyway, tell me what you already know of the illusionary arts. Surprised, Jakai turns around and sees a man standing. Whoa there. Sorry, you must be my sensei. I'll be sure to be attentive.

Jakai notices his sensei's serious tone and takes in a deep breath. The Illusionary Arts, otherwise known as Genjutsu, is one of the three basic skills used by shinobi besides Taijutsu and Ninjutsu. Unlike the other two, which cause real world damage or effects, Genjutsu is meant to cast illusions and false information. An exception though would be members of the Kurama Clan which can make their Genjutsus a reality, or with the Forbidden Uchiha Jutsu, Izanagi. The way Genjutsu works is by disrupting the flow of chakra in the opponent's system, which affects the brain waves of the target, making them see illusions. In order to break out of a genjutsu, two things must be done. The first is realizing that one is cast in a genjutsu. This has to be done with logic and reasoning, or noticing your own chakra network being disturbed, mostly with chakra sensing or with a Dojutsu. After one realizes they are in a Genjutsu, they must then break out of it. It's important to note how strong the genjutsu is though to make sure they can properly escape it. To break out of a genjutsu, the user needs to disrupt their own flow of chakra. This can be done with a full body surge technique, like Chidori Nagashi, so long as the rank of the jutsu is higher than the genjutsu casted. Additionally, genjutsu can be broken out through sheer pain. Depending on the strength of the genjutsu, a user will vary in how much internal pain they must inflict on themselves. For weak Genjutsus, simply biting your tongue or drawing some blood will do. However, for stronger ones, it will take more damage, such as breaking bones or biting your tongue off. Finally, the simplest way to escape a Genjutsu is with the Kai technique, which can allow the user to forcibly disrupt their own chakra. Lastly, there are 3 types of genjutsu. Normal, Dojutsu, and Sound based Genjutsu. Standard Genjutsu would be the genjutsu that I am learning. Dojutsu genjutsu would be in regards to the Sharingan. Sound based genjutsu would relate to sound waves that induce genjutsu.

Jakai then took a moment to ponder. And that's all I know about it

Wow, that was an earful. Make all of your responses to my questions of that caliber, condense the information but put in the same amount of effort. You made some mistakes so I guess I'll clarify them for you.

You were right in saying a genjutsu can never directly control someone's will or actions, only Sharingan genjutsus can do that. This doesn't apply to involuntary actions (such as a knee jerking) that they have no control over but voluntary and conscious ones. You can probe and may attempt to influence them into acting in a certain way, but ultimately the decision is theirs to take. Three types? There are more than that. Smell-based genjutsu which use a medium such as Perfume, Taste-based genjutsu and even illusions which are initiated on touch. You touched on the fact that you need to use a chakra surge high enough in rank or pain sufficient to break an illusion. How exactly do you gauge the rank of a Genjutsu technique? Also, to break higher ranked illusions, biting off your tongue is a truly disgraceful method to employ. Shedding blood gives your opponent the idea that they have the upper hand, not to mention the blood loss and the fact you'll no longer be capable of speech...or taste >_>. Before we proceed, read the following transcript which will detail how our Genjutsu will proceed as well as provide additional information on the subject. Make sure to read all of it.

The first step in realizing a genjutsu is observing for anything overly-obvious or something which would naturally probe your character's suspicion. In battle, I want you to observe even the smallest of disturbances in your surroundings and the slightest inconsistencies. I want you to notice, if a tree begins coiling around you, does it produce growing sounds as it emerges? If a fireball is shot towards you, does the heat of the technique resonate from it and make you feel like the temperature is rising? If you see an illusionary clone walking towards you, does it bend the grass when it walks? If you get burnt by something, does the wound sizzle as the burn is inflicted? Does the water beneath your feet ripple when you walk, or make any splashing sounds?

Pay very close attention to the senses a technique affects, its fundamental to breaking a genjutsu. If a technique doesn't specify the senses it affects, make sure you don't assume anything. Find other ways of seeing through the technique. Does the illusion respect the laws of reality? Does the illusion distort time and happen too abruptly and or does it distort the natural occurrence of events? I can't teach you how to realize every genjutsu, I can only teach you the concept of doing so. The rest is up to how much you take away from this training. One thing to bare in mind is, when you're trying to realize genjutsu, don't come up with extremely complicated thought processes or anything which wouldn't be realistic in the heat of a battle. I don't want you to "god-mod" or try to use knowledge your character doesn't have to break Genjutsus. You must be realistic and legitimate in the way you break genjutsus. I'd hate to be that guy who teaches his students to metagame their way out of illusions >_>

Additional Information I'd like you to read
1) Kai Release Method

( Genjutsu: Kai ) - Illusion Technique: Release
Rank: C-S
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 15-40
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user does one hand seal to focus and then proceeds to disturb his chakra flow by forcefully stopping it momentarily and then "spiking" his spiritual energy, unbalancing his chakra. This dispels any genjutsu set upon the user except MS Eye Techniques, Paralysis-like Genjutsu and Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant. The effectiveness of this technique is dependent upon the skill of the user. A Jounin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to C-rank. An S-class ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to B-rank. A Sannin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to A-rank. A Sage rank user can dispel Genjutsu up to S-Rank. The user may use this technique through physical contact on others to dispel them from Genjutsu. The technique can only be used once per turn and the user still needs to fully follow the logic as to why he figured out it was an illusion.

Using Kai to release Genjutsu is the simplest and arguably most common method. After performing a single handseal, the user will stop their chakra flow for a moment before spiking it to purge the opponent's foreign chakra from your body, hence releasing the illusionary technique. It can range from a C-Rank to an S-Rank technique, depending on the rank of the genjutsu you're trying to break. If an A-Rank Genjutsu is cast on you, you'll use an A-Rank Kai to release the technique. Keep in mind that even if you learn Kai, to break higher ranking genjutsus e.g. A-Ranks, you have to be of the right ninja rank (determined by posts). Also, it requires a single handseal to perform and so this technique can't be used against Genjutsus which paralyze/immobilize your body.

Other things to remember is, its a really uncreative method and some fights have rules stating either "one kai per battle" or "No Kai at all". Make sure to watch out for rules like this and don't become too dependent on using it. I don't think i've ever used Kai xD

2) Pain Release Method
Like you all correctly stated, Pain Release is the quickest but the most consequential of all Genjutsu Release methods. You can inflict this pain upon yourself in various ways e.g. removing a kunai to stab your arm or biting off your tongue. Usually people attempt to simply bite their tongue/the inside of their cheek but this seems like an invalid method.

1) Biting your tongue without removing it will break D-Rank Genjutsu at most
2) Biting off your tongue seems like a disgraceful/embarrassing method to use. Especially if you have to spit it out in front of your opponent. It will make them feel like they have the upper hand
3) The severe blood loss caused by biting off your tongue will give you about three turns to live (possibly less).
4) You can't talk anymore xD

And so as I say to all my students, never release a Genjutsu through biting off your tongue.

This is the chart of releasing genjutsus and the amount of pain you need to inflict on yourself:

D Rank: Chipping a Finger (like one does as he bites to draw blood for a Summoning Jutsu)
C Rank: Low level Physical Attacks, Bitting a chunk of your Cheek
B Rank: Low ranked Taijutsu/Freestyle
A Rank: High ranked Taijutsu, Stabbing Yourself in minor muscle, Cutting yourself, Breaking Smaller bones, Low level Burning/Voltage, Painful Cold
S Rank: EIG/Sage level Taijutsu, Breaking Bones, Deep Stabs or cuts, Medium Voltage/Burning, Extreme Painful Cold, Bitting your tongue off

Another nice way I learnt from Better to release Genjutsus is using the C-Rank Stone Spikes technique. When you realize a Genjutsu, whether it paralyzes you or not, channel your doton chakra into the ground and cause a single spike of earth to emerge. Angle the spike the depending on how much pain you want to inflict.

(Doton: Ganchūsō) - Earth Release: Stone Spikes
Rank: C
Type: Attack
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points: 30
Description: This technique lets the user create a few rock pillars that will protrude from the ground to skew the target. The rock pillars will even pass through obstacles to reach their target

If you're breaking a A-Rank or below gen, angle the spike to strike into your thigh or another part of your non-dominant leg.

If you're breaking S-Rank gen (and have no other options), angle the spike to emerge directly beneath one of your legs, to completely crush it up to the knee region. This will keep you standing up and block blood from gushing out of your body.

This method inflicts serious harm on to you and is only recommended if you have no other options. Sometimes this is the best method to use and so its better to take many wounds rather than fail to counter a Genjutsu. Also, this isn't a possible method to use when you're standing on water or a similar terrain. If you have a bio which can heal or take such wounds e.g. Hidan, Kakuzu, a medical shinobi, using Pain to release genjutsu is very tactical indeed. You don't waste a move countering one of their techniques by making full use of your bio's capabilities.

3) Full body surges
A full body surge is basically a technique which releases/leeks chakra out of every chakra point on your body at the same time. This sudden burst of chakra purges any foreign chakra residing in the body. A full body surge will break Genjutsu of one rank lower than it e.g. an A-Rank Surge breaks B-Rank and below Genjutsus. New rpers often only associate the word "surge" which lightning techniques, when in actuality all elements have potential to be full body surges.

Canon Full body surges
Nagashi (A-Rank)
Earth Release Armour (B-Rank)
Earth Spear (B-Rank)
Lightning Strike Armour (C-Rank)
Hardening Technique (S-Rank)

In our training, I'll not only teach you how to realize Genjutsu but also how to release yourself from the ones we learn. I've hired someone who you can cast all of the illusions you learn on and likewise he'll cast the same illusions on you. When you're under the effects of the genjutsu, I want you to recite out loud how you can logically deduce why you think you're within a illusion. Once you do this, you'll have to find a way to successfully break out of the illusion.

Any questions before we continue ?

Jakai listened closely to his Sensei. He was impressed with the knowledge as well as the many things that he didn't know or realize himself. After the extensive explanation, Jakai took a moment to review in his head everything that went on. Afterwards, his sensei asked him a question. Any questions before we continue?

Jakai took a moment to think. Actually Sensei, I got everything, but who did you hire? And my next question would be, when do we begin? He said with a smile on his face, clearly excited for his upcoming training.

Just a failed ninja who is in desperate need of money. Since this is your training, you'll be covering the costs of hiring him. Alright then, time to move onto the techniques.

( Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu ) - Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10 (+5 if you use it double)
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion over an area that allows him to manipulate the way an area looks to fool an opponent. He can only change the way the terrain looks, and not any other feature.

For the first technique, I'd like you to cast your partner in a genjutsu which changes a single feature about the battlefield itself e.g. makes a wall rise up, creates a pond or water source and etc. Quite a basic technique, doesn't require much explanation. After you do this, you will be cast in this illusion yourself and you will need to release yourself from it (via your preferred method be it pain, kai or a chakra surge) while reciting how you realize you're trapped in a Genjutsu out loud.

Questions to prompt you
What senses does this illusion effect?

What are the limitations of this technique?

Jakai dropped his jaw for a moment as he thought to himself. I have to pay for him! But... Aww man, now I'm gonna have to go take on that extra job... Putting it aside, he began. Jakai then placed the man inside a genjutsu, where he would have the an hole in the ground to appear. Jakai would then suddenly be put in the Genjutsu. Seeing this, he found it strange that he did not feel the earth crumble in order to make the hole. Upon closer examination, Jakai realized that when he would throw a kunai into the hole, it would land above the opening, as if in midair. It was this that made Jakai realize that the ground was still there. Jakai would then recite how he realized this. Sensei, I believe I understand. This jutsu works by affecting the target's sense of sight and nothing else. I couldn't feel the earth crumble to form a hole. Also, if I walk over the illusion, it turns out being that the real world around me previously is still in how it was. Basically, I can still feel the original shape of the terrain. So, the best way to perform this technique would be to use it in conjunction with a ninjutsu to make the effects in the terrain appear slightly true. The genjutsu can be used as a distraction or to exaggerate effects of a technique. The other limitations would be that this technique can only affect the terrain. So I can't change the way a technique looks, or the way a person looks, because they are not considered part of a terrain.

(Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu) — Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique
Type: Supplementary
Rank: D
Range: Short - Mid
Chakra Cost: 10 (+5 if Used Twice)
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion over an area that allows him to manipulate the way an area looks to fool an opponent. He can only change the way the terrain looks, and not any other feature.
Jakai would then proceed to bite his thumb, causing it to bleed, allowing him to exit the genjutsu. (I can activate my Sharingan later. I'm still too lazy to post me activating it lol)

DISCLAIMER
Jakai awakens from his sudden hibernation... Ready to work... I believe an apology is in order... I am sorry... I plan to redeem myself with efficient replies... Sorry again... Thanks for not dropping me... Love you... No Homo... What was I doing again?... Oh yea... I'm gonna copy and paste this to all my trainings I'm late too... I'm still too lazy I guess... Can't even make unique replies to each sensei/senpai... Man, I really know how to ramble... I even have battles I have to reply too... I wonder if I can use this same schpeel and copy and paste it on my battles for reason as to why I'm late with replies... I don't know... I guess I can change it a little... But then I'd have to change it for everyone... Nah, they'll understand... You guys understand right?... Weird... I just realized I'm talking directly to someone as well as about someone at the same time... Who knows if who I'm talking to... Or even how many people... Anyways... You get the gist of this... The other guys probably get the gist too... (There I go again switching between talking to someone and about someone)... Alright... Sorry... I'll reply on time... I mean it... No more than 24 hours... I don't have anything going on anymore... Sorry...

TL;DR: I'm active again now. I will make replies within 24 hours

Perfect.

( Genjutsu: Kahen Tonsou ) - Illusion Technique: Flower Petal Escape
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.

Ah, I was Part 1 Naruto today and just saw this technique in use for the first time. It isn't bad but I dislike the excessive use of handseals for such a low ranking technique. Now I'd like you to perform a string of five handseals to cause your partner to see you "dissolve" into a cloud of cherry blossoms. These same cherry blossom petals will move towards the opponent and cloud his/her vision, allowing you to mask your movements in reality.

Key Points: Lower ranking techniques tend to control less senses, this probably solely controls the sense of sight.

Jakai nodded his head, signaling his readiness to continue. Before doing so, Jakai realized he would need to start getting serious, so he activated his Sharingan with 2 Tomoe in each eye.

(Doujutsu: Sharingan) Eye Technique: Copy Wheel Eye
Type: Supplementary
Rank: A
Range: Short - Long
Chakra: 30 (-10 per turn to keep active)
Damage: N/A
Description: One of the Three Great Dōjutsu (San Daidōjutsu), the Sharingan is the kekkei genkai of the Uchiha clan. Unlike the other Dōjutsu, not all members of the Uchiha Clan possess the Sharingan. This great Dōjutsu seems to awaken only on exceptional Uchiha members and only in times of great stress. Once awaken, the pupil turns red and a single tomoe (巴) seal appears around the center pupil. As the user masters and evolves their eyes, the tomoe (巴) seals increase, topping 3 per eye. The main ability of the Sharingan, like any other Dōjutsu, is to enable the user to see the flow of chakra. This ability is further improved as the Sharingan gives color to chakra, enabling the user to differentiate chakras from different people or from different sources. Although the user can see chakra through matter, he cannot see beyond dense matter or in long distances. Coupled with the ability to see chakra, Sharingan users gain acess to an incredible clarity of perception that enables them to read insanely fast movements or minor details, enabling them the ability to foresee in an easier way, traps, incoming attacks, etc. This clarity of perception is so great that a Sharingan user can sometimes start performing a counter to an attack that is still being performed, enabling the counter to be launched only a split a second after the attack. This clarity of perception leaves Sharingan users able to track high speed movement easily as well as to read through handseals. This last ability enables them to learn techniques much faster and sometimes copy them directly from the enemy, as long as the user has the necessary chakra affinities and requirements to perform it. Finally, the Sharingan is often linked to Genjutsu and mind-manipulating illusions, mostly because the user can, mostly through Eye Contact, directly and precisely use his chakra to manipulate the enemy's chakra flow. In return, the users clarity of perception gives him the ability to more easily decipher visual illusions cast upon him and see past them. The Sharingan has a great cost to the user though. The chakra consumption disables its use for long periods of time and, even when the user grows stronger, it's still hard to keep it active for long periods of time.

Note: The user, if he hasn't gained full mastery over his Sharingan, will need to spend a move to activate it, although as long as he has chakra and enough stamina he'll be able to keep it active until the end of the match. If the user is Sannin Rank or above and has gained his 3 Tomoe Sharingan and held it for one month, he becomes able to passively activate it, meaning he'll no longer spend a move of his 3 per turn.
Note: To avoid direct Eye Contact and be able to focus only on the body movement below the chin, the opponent needs to have mastered Taijutsu to possess the necessary skill.
Note: Predicting the nature of a technique or what it exactly is requires the user to either know the technique or that its a cannon technique.
Note: Danzo and Kakashi bios activate the Sharingan by removing the covers in their respective eyes and suffer a +10 chakra consumption per turn penalty
Note: The user is bound by the abilities and limits of the stage of sharingan he possesses, stated in the rules of the KG.
Jakai moved on to the next technique. As instructed, Jakai performed the 5 hand seals while molding his chakra. He would then cast the genjutsu on the man. In doing so, Jakai would appear to dissolve into a flurry of cherry blossom flower petals. This caused the man's sight to be blocked, allowing Jakai to move around more freely. Alright, I'm ready. After saying that, the man would then cast the same Genjutsu on Jakai. After performing the 5 handseals, Jakai saw the man begin to vanish amongst the cherry blossoms. The blossoms would then head towards me, at which time my vision was beginning to fade until I could not see. Well, I can easily tell this is a genjutsu. I mean, even though this technique can block my vision completely, my other senses are intact. I can't feel the touch of the petals, nor can I feel any breeze that would come from a shower of petals. If I had a good enough sense of smell, I could probably realize these flowers don't even have the right smell to them. In fact, they wouldn't have a scent in the first place.

(Genjutsu: Kahen Tonsou) — Illusion Technique: Flower Petal Escape

Upon coming to the realization that it was a Genjutsu, Jakai would then break free from the illusion thanks to his Sharingan.
