Asuma's death wasn't sad, I never even liked him, he seemed like a loser. Even Hebi Sasuke could wreck Asuma.

I wouldn't say sad but extremely emotional (well for me)
If you watched the episode (the one after Asuma dies and its his funeral) Shikamaru didnt attend but just wandered along. His father asks him to join him in a game of Shogi and they talk, Shikaku rambles along how great of a shinobi Asuma was and how much potential his son has. Anyways Shikamaru gets fed up and bursts into anger.
His father simply stands up and says "Let it out boy" meaning to let out all the anger and hate and just cry, because its okay.
THAT to me is probably one of the realest things I've ever witnessed in any anime because anyone can relate.
