Where are they getting the matching money?
Oh I see, I misunderstood the system. I guess the logic is that since the system is based on individual, non corporate donors, the city is justified in giving the publicly allocated funds to help thecampaigners, because it's a technically democratic process. I don't know if I agree, but I see how it's legal. Whoever can get the most donations is the one who's be winning anyway. I guess most NYCers donate Democrat.
This is to amplify campaigns to keep voters informed, is the outward logic, I guess. Also, individual taxpayers whon ordinarily wouldn't be able to make much of a contribution and impact in the system in comparison to corporations and organizations have a vector to make greater contributions and have a greater impact in the race through the matching system.
The money would be better spent elsewhere, I agree. But I understand it's purpose. I'd have to look into how it was established.
