Sasuke's extremely creative, but in terms of natural intellect/maturity relative to his age, I think Kakashi beats him.

(although Kakashi seemed about as immature as Sasuke at 12, so maybe not.)

Imo Sasuke/Madara are about even.

I just gave it to Madara because he's so accomplished creatively (even more than Sauce.)

Kabuto doesn't deserve to be on par with Itachi. If the roles were inversed, I'm sure Itachi would have realised (assuming he had no knowledge of how Izanami worked) how to end the infinite loop. Kabuto couldn't, he panicked because he thought he had become too strong to be susceptible to genjutsu.

Nah, Kabuto is one of the smartest characters in the series. I could go far in-depth explaining why he's a badass intellectual. From jutsu creation/perfection, skills scholastically, battle analysis. This guy is insane.

Sasuke doesn't deserve to be on that list either. He is way too easily swayed. as Itachi put it, "Sasuke can be easily painted another color", and one cannot be deemed intelligent if they are easily persuaded.

Tell that to Deidara.

Intelligence can be split in to different categories. Tactical(Kakashi, Shikaku), jutsu(Hiruzen, Orochimaru) and even political, even though that would be a debatable category depending on who you side with(Hashirama compared to Danzo being one example), or maybe you prefer Hiruzen's peaceful approach or Tobirama/Ay's "no mercy" approach, etc, etc.

There is no "top 10".

I would like to read this in-depth analysis of yours on Kabuto.
No doubt, he is smarter than many shinobi. He improved upon Orochimaru's techniques, created a few of his own, knows a lot of dirty secrets from mostly all villages (from his life as a spy), etc.

What I'm claiming is that despite all his accomplishments, Itachi has been shown to be way better. Not only in terms of battle skill, but in the speed of his cognitive processes. And although Shisui's eye was not used for its intended purpose, that backup plan would have seriously thwarted any attempt by Sasuke (or abusers of Sasuke) on the village.

The main reason Itachi's plan to save Sasuke (from the dark side) failed is because he didn't account for the hatred/love that Sasuke had for others. Itachi is different, he isn't "cursed" like the other Uchiha. His concern was for the greater good, not selfish desires (a strong train of a sapient being, unlike Kabuto).



I can also make many claims for Sasuke's case but I think most agree Itachi > Sasuke, be it physically or mentally.

I agree with the people on the list but not the order.

There expertise all lay in different categories

The top two should of been itachi and orochimaru

Orochimaru stood out to hiruzen as a powerful and intelligent shinobi only seen once in every generation.
The only reason he did not become hokage was because hiruzn saw that he was becoming evil.That means even though minato was powerful as well he still sought orochimaru for the position.

He made the curse seal
He made made a better senju clone then madara
Was able to cheat the shinigami and revive those who were thought impossible to bring back
and with the help of kabuto was able to cipher the uchiha tablet without a dojustu.
Nobody is smarter then this man except for possibly itachi since Hiruzen,Danzo,Kabuto,Tobi,Minato,even orochimaru himself and hashirama have praised him for genius.

Not a bad list, but personally I'd say:

1. Orochimaru (Barely over shikaku imo, because the guy has planned so much stuff that would carry on until after he died...and get ressurected).

2. Shikaku (Shikamaru has an iq over 200 in part 1...at age 13. Now Shikamaru is sixteen and much smarter, and he still loses to his dad in Shogi. What does that tell you).

3. Shikamaru (iq of 200 at age 13=epic)

4. Kabuto: high medical knowledge, high information on nearly everyone, incredibly smart iq.

5. Hiruzen: was said to be the wisest/smartest Hokage.

6/7. Itachi/Minato (both are very intelligent)

8. Kakashi (he has shown some very smart moments over the years)

9. Danzo (as much as I dislike this character, he was very intelligent)

10. Madara (he's made a awesome plan...but he hasn't shown THAT much intelligence yet)

the most logical post made thus far! Do you all know the line of intelligence?! Being fully aware of your clans history or having to be strategic due your your clans ability shouldn't automatically put someone in top 10. Intelligence in Naruto is versatility, knowledge of jutus and being able to perform them, creating jutsu and having successfully planned out current events.

Shikamaru is smart for planning, he desires credit for this but there are other shinobi who have displayed high degrees of overall intelligence, such as a Sasori. Shikamaru's strength relates to his clans ability, he hasn't shown anything outside of this.

Minato is obviously smart, but the only feat that I can give him credit for is his ftg ability, everything else worth mentioning came from the Uzumaki clan. He is fast on his feet (literally), but his hype is what would put him in top 10.

Not including hype, the top three intelligent shinobi would be Itachi, Kakashi and Orochimaru. Shikaku is brillant and definatly top 5, but his intellgence demonstrates a similar as Shikamaru.

Itachi has been credited for his knowledge, but has displayed this on multiple occasions. While all his plans seem to fail, this usually out of his control, as others tend to interfere. Itachi w/o sharingan is talented in a variety of jutsu, having graduated w/o it.

Orochimaru created and master the most jutsu in the series (I'll list upon request), has successfully planned ahead, scientist, and has been apart of the most extraordinary oragizations in the series (ROOT, akatsuki and a Sannin). Lastly, his rivals someone who was labellded the "God of Shinobi" for his generation.

Kakashi has shown many feats and have too created his own jutsu, etc etc.

Circumstantial feats are circumstantial. Kabuto's plot relevance doesn't allow for much use of his intellect; he's discarded in favour of Itachi.

Regardless, rather view intelligence as a quality that you either have or don't. Classifying it is rather hard, as it's almost abstract.

I'd choose to state that, Itachi and Kabuto have the same "capacity" or a similar knack when it comes to smarts.
Wherein they'd be capable of similar feats or achievements through several uses of it i.e. they'd perform similarly in tests of intellect.

I'd like see where you found that Itachi is superior "in the speed of his cognitive processes" in comparison to Kabuto.

Also, I'd rather view Sasuke and Itachi as equals. I deem them equals. I understand both of their characterizations, and I'm quite familiar with all of their intellectual feats.
