It's a form of sensory/tracking.

There's probably hundreds of people in that village alone, probably entering and leaving, including animals. And he managed to discern Jiraiya's presence pretty damn fast.

It's rather weird though. If he can scan an entire dimension it should be impossible for someone get the drop on him.

But it looks like that large radius sensing takes a lot out of him.

Good list,but Madara isn't a sensor,he only felt Hashirama's power because he knows him personally.Shino should probably be higher I remember in the forest of death,he sensed how many enemies were around just from placing his ear against a tree.Chapter 46-47,somewhere around there.i remember by heart but im too lazy to get the scan,since im on mobile.

He also was able to track Sasuke down just from placing a female bug on him - the male bugs were able to find her easily - about chapter 124-126 towards the end,probably on the last page.
