So Toonami is once again going to air One Piece on its block on May 18, but there's one problem:

Starting on the Davy Back Fight Arc because in my opinion will create problems because of these three factors:

1. The Davy Back Fight Arc "Anime Quality"

The Davy Back Fight Arc in my opinion is the poorest arc in the entire series. Don't get me wrong I like the arc it's very enjoyable and funny, but compared to the other arcs this one seems to have the least relevancy to the plot plus I honestly feel that the anime butchered. The only important thing that was actually in this arc was the introduction to Aokiji near the end. This arc itself to be honest brings this ambiance of filler arc because of it's barely relevancy to the plot and even the the studio behind One Piece took it upon themselves to extend the arc into a filler poorly where the Foxy Pirates return for revenge against Luffy by challenging him to another Davy Back Fight. I can see first time One Piece viewers actually lose interest in the series because the anime handled it poorly and definitely deformed it so this would really be a horrible way to actually start watching One Piece on Toonami

2. Skipping Important Arcs

The main problem of this decision is a lot of arcs would be skipping. When it comes to One Piece, the arcs blend together into the plot and are foreshadowed countless times throughout the series.

Things That Are Important:

East Blue Saga

Romance Dawn Arc:
.Important character's introduced: Luffy, Zoro, Shanks

.Zoro joining the crew

.Luffy's and Zoro's dreams.

.Coby and Helmeppo introduction (their importance to the storyline is shown in the Post-Enies Lobby Arc and the Marineford Arc)

.Alvida introduction

.First time that Luffy becomes recognized by the government after defeating former Captain Morgan

Orange Town Arc:
.Nami introduction

.Buggy Introduction (who was a former crew mate of Shanks and who will lead Impel Down prisoners to escape the prison before the Marineford Arc )

.Reveals that Shanks and Buggy were part of the Roger Pirates

.Flashback of Buggy in the Roger Pirates ship reveals that the man who mediates him and Shanks in their arguments is Rayleigh, the former first mate.

Syrup Village Arc:
.Usopp Introduction

.The Going Merry introduction

Baratie Arc:
.Sanji introduction

.Mihawk introduction

Arlong Park Arc:

.Nami permanently joined the crew

.Fishmen introduction

.Luffy's first bounty

Lougetown Arc
.Introduction to Smoker and Tashigi

.Dragon appearance

.Buggy-Alvida Alliance

Baroque Works Saga

Reverse Mountain Arc

.Laboon introduction

Whiskey Peak Arc

.Zoro's first bounty

.Baroque Works introduction

.Nico Robin introduction

.Vivi introduction

Little Garden Arc

.Introduces Giants

.Ussop's friendship with the giants

Drum Island Arc
.Chopper introduction

.Reveals Gold Roger's real name to be Gol D. Roger and Will Of D

Alabasta Arc

. Introduction to Zoan DF weapon users

.Poneglyphs and the True History

.Ace Introduction

.Nami's Clima-tact weapon

Skypiea Saga

Jaya Arc

.Blackbeard, Bellamy, Sengoku, Kuma, Doflamingo, Gorosei, and Whitebeard introduction

Skypiea Arc

.A Ponyglyph marked by Gol. D Roger

.Gold founded by the Straw Hats to build the Thousand Sunny

.Dials

.Observation Haki

.Enel introduction

3. The Pacing of the Anime on Toonami

It's hasn't been that long since Funimation released the dubbed version of the Davy Back Fight Arc probably sometime last summer. The Water 7 Arc dubbed version was also released at a recent time around winter. So it'll take a while for Funimation to release the dubbed version of the Enies Lobby Arc probably in a couple of months from now. So if they decided to air the Davy Back Fight next month, it shouldn't be long before they get to the point where they'd have to air reruns or go on break due to the unavailability of the dubbed version of a section of an arc they've reached which would definitely lower views for the series in Toonami.

So conclusion, I think it wasn't a wise decision for Funimation to release One Piece on Toonami on the Davy Back Fight Arc. They did bring up that you would be able to watch the older episodes on their site, but then what's the point of actually watching it on Toonami then if you can just go to the site itself. In my opinion I think the best choice for a starting arc if they had to skip a few would be the Arlong arc cause it's usually the arc that hooks viewers into the series.

It really is hard to say where they should have started One Piece. They did air it at one time everything up to that point. Maybe they should have done the G-8 filler arc, then have that tie into Long Ring Island and the Davy Back Fight Arc. I think people seeing Foxy might scare them off. I hate him with the up most passion. He pisses me off so damn much. I don't think many people will know that a lot of it is extended filler. The thing I don't like is how it doesn't follow the manga and actually ruins the rules of the fight. I doubt others will care however.

They got to the end of Water 7 dubbed I believe. To me, if they don't finish Enies Lobby dubbed by the time they get to the end, I will feel sorry for the people not wanting to move to the subbed. For those that do, it will be the best experience of their life. Iv'e watched a few of the new dub episodes and I have to say they aren't bad. The guy who plays Usopp who also voices Krillin in the Funimation Dub does a really good job portraying the pure emotion that goes on in the one epic scene which I will not say or even hint to because it will ruin the suspense for people.

If they do not finish the arc after Water 7, I can see them repeating all of One Piece over again so people can know what is going on.

For those thinking of watching One Piece when it comes on Toonami, I suggest you play catch up if you have no clue what has happened before the Davy Back Fight. It is much better to enjoy it from the beginning then to dive head on in the middle of the show, even though this saga is one of my favorites.
