Title says it all. What do you think, is the new protagonist the old one with his memories erased, or he's a completely new stand-alone character.

My vote goes to the first option. Why you ask?

Among many other reasons ( ), but this one's been the one that's hit me the hardest. I omitted it when I read chapter 143 a while ago, or rather, I assumed it's Arima's silhouette. But it kinda makes sense now. This Sui Ishida is a freakin genius. All hail.
Anyways what do you think?

Yes it's freaking awesome.

I think you have to start at chapter 70-ish. Though I'm not sure anymore.
Somewhere around that. Some of the instances in the manga are different though. The one I can remember the best off the top of my head is the Gourmet arc taking place after the Hinami arc in the manga, as opposed to the anime.

Yeah maybe his memory was wiped out and his quinque is in the briefcase.

Or he's just dead and they extracted his abilities, quinque, and looks and gave it to Sasaki's squad.

Dunno why you people look so deep into this when it's essentially been confirmed that Haise is Kaneki.

He got rocked by a spear two times into the head, through the brain. Not a surprise he would have amnesia. There are multiple things that imply it's Kaneki. From his looks to his love for books. Actually, scratch that. It's not that they imply it's Kaneki, it's obvious that Haise is Kaneki.

Kaneki's indentity has been erased as you can see from the right panel. And the ''ownership'' rights became Arima's. And Arima gave him the name ''Haise''.

The ''yes'' from the bottom panel, where the suitcase is, was a mistranslation because no one knew what Arima said at that time so they just translated it as ''yes'' until it was revealed only recently that what Arima said in that panel was ''Haise'', not ''yes''. Not surprisingly, the ''new'' MC's name is also Haise, which is in fact the new name Arima gave him. Which in return, leads us to the fact that Akira reffered to Haise's and Arima's relationship as a son-father type of relationship.

Arima was given the ownership rights of Kaneki, which would essentially make him his ''father''. And Kaneki's new name is ''Haise'' which was given to him by Arima in the last chapter of the old manga. It's pretty obvious Kaneki is Haise. I don't really consider it a ''theory'', to be honest.
