Well he saved him and brought him down safely. How would u deal with a friend when u are about to murder someone close to them XD
EDIT: Nevermind. I read the translation and apparently Kaneki was just holding Kanae down by the neck. When he walks up to Shuu shuu asks Kaneki who is he and Kaneki says something like 'oh you are tsukuyama' and then stabs him. (Still if Kaneki wanted to kill Shuu he knows it would take a lot more than that. Chances are he only injured him enough to put him down.)
another thing of interest is that Kaneki is about to challenge Eto and he is wondering whether she is stronger than Arima.
