There has been a lot of speculation on Tobi's true identity but I've got a theory I think Tobi is Senju Tobirama more commonly known as the second hokage!!! Yes this seems a little far fetched but I think Tobirama made a deal with Madara Uchiha while he was on his death bed that if Madara gave Tobirama a.k.a. Tobi his newly formed Rinnengan and the power to control the world through the eye in the moon plan he would bring him back to life as an immortal using an improvement of his technic Edo Tensei (Impure World Resurrection) which I believe is a technic that could only be formulated by a man with serious flaws and used a variation of this jutsu to bring back the six jinchuriki with all their former abilities. This theory would also explain his in-depth knowledge of Senju Hisharame and Madara Uchiha, it would be relatively easy for him to acquire the first's cells which he the used to clone him as the white zetsu!!! It would also explain his chosen name Tobi. No one was there to watch him die when he fought the the 20 elite cloud ninja the kinkaku force!!!
