Kakuzu looks at the three shinobi before him staring into the distance...in the wrong direction.

Be more attentive to your surroundings, I could of been an enemy ninja. Anyway, tell me what you know of Genjutsu ?

Tobirama stands up and starts speaking.

Genjutsu are illusionary techniques that ninja use to subdue or "mind rape" their opponents. Most genjutsu require hand seals, but all genjutsu require chakra. Instead of attacking the body, Genjutsu attacks the opponents chakra flow to create these illusions. The 2nd Mizukage stated that most, if not all of genjutsu falls under Yin release.

Vegeta stands up

Genjutsu is not used as often as Tai or Ninjutsu, because it lacks punch. However, the damage that can be inflicted to an opponent mentally, emotionally, as well as physically while the person is under the genjutsu, can be devastating. Genjutsu is created by controlling the chakra flow to their brain, or moreover, the nervous system, to manipulate the 5 senses

Genjutsu is simply ninjutsu that affects the opponents mind without creating a physical change in the world, except certain KG. It is done by using your own chakra to disrupt the flow of your opponent chakra making them believe false events or live falsities, some require handseals. Sharingan genjutsu can be cast by eye contact alone and certain genjutsu users only need the point of a finger.

Alright, your current understanding of genjutsu is very basic, but its something to build on. Genjutsu relies on manipulating your opponent's perception of reality for whatever effect the user wishes to create. Genjutsu seeks to govern over your opponent's five main senses (Sight, Hearing, Smell, Touch and Taste), with Sight and Touch being the most commonly used. I like to think of it as the art of deception, a way of probing your foe into acting in certain ways and more importantly, avoiding certain actions. Genjutsu can also be used on the user's themselves to aid them in various ways.

Now, I want you to tell me how it works, how it affects your opponent, how you would overcome it in battle and what methods of releasing them you know of. Make this as detailed as possible, I need to gauge your current level of knowledge on the matter.

Genjutsu works by messing with your oppnents chakra system, or to be more exact, the chakra flow by the brain. It can affect my opponent by making them lose one or multiple senses, imagine illusions, or to traumatize people. Most genjutsu can be overcame with a simple surge of chakra called Kai, sensors can sense their chakra flow is off and injure themselves thus releasing them, or someone else can put some of their chakra in your system.

Genjutsu is when you gain control over another's 5 main senses by sending your chakra into the person's nervous system and brain, disrupting the normal flow. Also, some have been seen using genjutsu on themselves to enhance their fighting. When someone is under a genjutsu, you can make them see illusions of your own imagery. You can make them attack the wrong targets, maybe even their own colleague. Genjutsu can be released by having someone else infuse their chakra into you, once again disrupting the flow of chakra and breaking you free. Also, one can injure themselves, or someone else can injure you to break you out.

Genjutsu works by using ones chakra to alter/ added the chakra being sent to the brain which in return percieves things differantly as a result. It can be something as small as a tree to drastic environmental changes the opponent believes took place. One under genjutsu can also be lead to feeling false pain as a result of what happened in the genjutsu, while genjutsu like tsukiymi cause such relistic and strong pain that one is mentally traumatized. Genjutsu can be released in a number of ways kai being used often, once you realize that you are in a by evaluating all circumstances. Inflicting pain depending on the severity of the genjutsu can also break you out. J
Perfect jins can have there chakra flow restabalized by their bijju similarly a shinobi can release his partner. Casting a genjutsu on a person under a genjutsu to cancel out the illusion created by your own can also work. Lastly sharingans which can track the slightest of movement and chakra let their user know they are in a genjutsu and break out.

I expect much more detail in future. I'll fortify the knowledge you currently have, pay attention to my every word. A genjutsu can never directly control someone's will or actions, only Sharingan genjutsus can do that. You can probe and may attempt to influence them into acting in a certain way, but ultimately the decision is theirs to take. Since I don't wield a Sharingan, I won't be able to teach you the clan's exclusive techniques. Before we proceed, read the following transcript which will detail how our Genjutsu will proceed as well as provide additional information on the subject. Make sure to read all of it.

The first step in realizing a genjutsu is observing for anything overly-obvious or something which would naturally probe your character's suspicion. In battle, I want you to observe even the smallest of disturbances in your surroundings and the slightest inconsistencies. I want you to notice, if a tree begins coiling around you, does it produce growing sounds as it emerges ? If a fireball is shot towards you, does the heat of the technique resonate from it and make you feel like the temperature is rising ? If you see an illusionary clone walking towards you, does it bend the grass when it walks ? If you get burnt by something, does the wound sizzle as the burn is inflicted ? Does the water beneath your feet ripple when you walk, or make any splashing sounds ?

Pay very close attention to the senses a technique affects, its fundamental to breaking a genjutsu. If a technique doesn't specify the senses it affects, make sure you don't assume anything. Find other ways of seeing through the technique. Does the illusion respect the laws of reality ? Does the illusion distort happen to abruptly and distorts the natural occurrence of events ? I can't teach you how to realize every genjutsu, I can only teach you the concept of doing so. The rest is up to how much you take away from this training. One thing to bare in mind is, when you're trying to realize genjutsu, don't come up with extremely complicated thought processes or anything which wouldn't be realistic in the heat of a battle. I don't want you to "god-mod" or try to use knowledge your character doesn't have to break Genjutsus. You must be realistic and legitimate in the way you break genjutsus. I'd hate to be that guy who teaches his students to metagame their way out of illusions >_>

Additional Information I'd like you to read
1) Kai Release Method

( Genjutsu: Kai ) - Illusion Technique: Release
Rank: C-S
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 15-40
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user does one hand seal to focus and then proceeds to disturb his chakra flow by forcefully stopping it momentarily and then "spiking" his spiritual energy, unbalancing his chakra. This dispels any genjutsu set upon the user except MS Eye Techniques, Paralysis-like Genjutsu and Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant. The effectiveness of this technique is dependent upon the skill of the user. A Jounin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to C-rank. An S-class ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to B-rank. A Sannin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to A-rank. A Sage rank user can dispel Genjutsu up to S-Rank. The user may use this technique through physical contact on others to dispel them from Genjutsu. The technique can only be used once per turn and the user still needs to fully follow the logic as to why he figured out it was an illusion.

Using Kai to release Genjutsu is the simplest and arguably most common method. After performing a single handseal, the user will stop their chakra flow for a moment before spiking it to purge the opponent's foreign chakra from your body, hence releasing the illusionary technique. It can range from a C-Rank to an S-Rank technique, depending on the rank of the genjutsu you're trying to break. If an A-Rank Genjutsu is cast on you, you'll use an A-Rank Kai to release the technique. Keep in mind that even if you learn Kai, to break higher ranking genjutsus e.g. A-Ranks, you have to be of the right ninja rank (determined by posts). Also, it requires a single handseal to perform and so this technique can't be used against Genjutsus which paralyze/immobilize your body.

Other things to remember is, its a really uncreative method and some fights have rules stating either "one kai per battle" or "No Kai at all". Make sure to watch out for rules like this and don't become too dependent on using it. I don't think i've ever used Kai xD

2) Pain Release Method
Like you all correctly stated, Pain Release is the quickest but the most consequential of all Genjutsu Release methods. You can inflict this pain upon yourself in various ways e.g. removing a kunai to stab your arm or biting off your tongue. Usually people attempt to simply bite their tongue/the inside of their cheek but this seems like an invalid method.

1) Biting your tongue without removing it will break D-Rank Genjutsu at most
2) Biting off your tongue seems like a disgraceful/embarrassing method to use. Especially if you have to spit it out in front of your opponent. It will make them feel like they have the upper hand
3) The severe blood loss caused by biting off your tongue will give you about three turns to live (possibly less).
4) You can't talk anymore xD

And so as I say to all my students, never release a Genjutsu through biting off your tongue.

This is the chart of releasing genjutsus and the amount of pain you need to inflict on yourself:

D-Ranks: Biting your tongue or equivalent
C-Rank: Cutting yourself slightly e.g. piercing your skin with a kunai
B-Ranks: Small stab wound or equivalent
A-Ranks: You need to stab/inflict serious harm to a limb or equivalent
S-Ranks: You need to lose limb or inflict equivalent pain

Another nice way I learnt from Better to release Genjutsus is using the C-Rank Stone Spikes technique. When you realize a Genjutsu, whether it paralyzes you or not, channel your doton chakra into the ground and cause a single spike of earth to emerge. Angle the spike the depending on how much pain you want to inflict.

(Doton: Ganchūsō) - Earth Release: Stone Spikes
Rank: C
Type: Attack
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points: 30
Description: This technique lets the user create a few rock pillars that will protrude from the ground to skew the target. The rock pillars will even pass through obstacles to reach their target

If you're breaking a A-Rank or below gen, angle the spike to strike into your thigh or another part of your non-dominant leg.

If you're breaking S-Rank gen (and have no other options), angle the spike to emerge directly beneath one of your legs, to completely crush it up to the knee region. This will keep you standing up and block blood from gushing out of your body.

This method inflicts serious harm on to you and is only recommended if you have no other options. Sometimes this is the best method to use and so its better to take many wounds rather than fail to counter a Genjutsu. Also, this isn't a possible method to use when you're standing on water or a similar terrain. If you have a bio which can heal or take such wounds e.g. Hidan, Kakuzu, a medical shinobi, using Pain to release genjutsu is very tactical indeed. You don't waste a move countering one of their techniques by making full use of your bio's capabilities.

3) Full body surges
A full body surge is basically a technique which releases/leeks chakra out of every chakra point on your body at the same time. This sudden burst of chakra purges any foreign chakra residing in the body. A full body surge will break Genjutsu of one rank lower than it e.g. an A-Rank Surge breaks B-Rank and below Genjutsus. New rpers often only associate the word "surge" which lightning techniques, when in actuality all elements have potential to be full body surges.

Canon Full body surges
Nagashi (A-Rank)
Earth Release Armour (B-Rank)
Earth Spear (B-Rank)
Lightning Strike Armour (C-Rank)
Hardening Technique (S-Rank)
Depth Charge (B-Rank)

We'll be using the following template for all of the Genjutsu techniques we learn. You will learn two at a time, testing each and every Genjutsu you learn on eachother. Whilst under the effects of the Genjutsu, your partner will recite out loud how he/she can logically deduce why they think they're within a Genjutsu. Once they do this, they will successfully break out of the illusion and cast the other in the same Genjutsu. The faster you take to this and the more detailed your replies means we'll breeze through Genjutsu.

You put a lot of detail into that Kakuzu-sensei. Only question I have is if the Water Replacement jutsu is a full body surge. Same for the Hozuki clan's liquification.

My question would be in regards to damaging yourself, how do you know how much damage to deal to your ownself? Does it do the 30 points damage that the earth jutsu says, or is it more because your crushing your own limb?

@Your question, Go to Biography Rules, look up Illusionary Arts and check the list of how much pain you inflict. Its not about damage points, rather just the sensation of pain so to speak.

Alright then, time to move onto the techniques.

( Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu ) - Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10 (+5 if you use it double)
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion over an area that allows him to manipulate the way an area looks to fool an opponent. He can only change the way the terrain looks, and not any other feature.

For the first technique, I'd like you to cast your partner in a genjutsu which changes a single feature about the battlefield itself e.g. makes a wall rise up, creates a pond or water source and etc. Quite a basic technique, doesn't require much explanation.

Key Points: Cannot effect things which aren't considered the terrain e.g. masking the fact you've thrown a kunai. Also, pay very close attention to wording. This jutsu only changes the way the terrain looks, meaning no sounds and smells are produced along with it. Also, any features you create, are of course intangible.

( Genjutsu: Kahen Tonsou ) - Illusion Technique: Flower Petal Escape
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.

After doing that, I'd like you to perform a string of five handseals to cause your partner to see you "dissolve" into a cloud of cherry blossoms. These same cherry blossom petals will move towards the opponent and cloud his/her vision, allowing you to mask your movements in reality.

Key Points: Lower ranking techniques tend to control less senses, this probably controls the sense of sight *hint hint*

Now, follow my instructions, fill out the template and no one will get hurt xD.

Tobirama looks at Vegeta, and without hesitation Tobirama exerts some chakra to mess with Vegeta's chakra system. As this happens, a pond is created out of thin air 5 meters to his left and my right.

Combinations you could make with this jutsu: After making my opponent go under the genjutsu, I would make them imagine a pillar of earth is coming up in front of them, blocking their line of sight. As the sight is blocked, I would then use a swamp of the underworld, or a Water Prison.

Your reasoning on why you would deduce it to be a Genjutsu: It makes no sound, it has no feel, no smell. It would be quite simple.

Your preferred method of release: Kai would be easy, maybe the jutsu where you turn yourself into water, or a full body surge like Doton: Domu.

Rate the technique out of ten: 6.

Questions about the technique (Optional): How would you perform this better? Description wise.

Tobirama looks at Vegeta once more and starts kneading chakra. As Tobirama kneads chakra, he preforms five hand seals and exerts his chakra at Vegeta, which messes with Vegeta's chakra system. As this happens, Tobirama turns into cherry blossoms and starts swaying back and forth at his partner.

Combinations you could make with this jutsu: I would make a Kage Bunshin and then use this technique with my Bunshin as I attack from below with a Hiding like a Mole and then a Chidori Sharp Spear.

Your reasoning on why you would deduce it to be a Genjutsu: He is dissolving into cherry blossoms, and that really does not happen outside of genjutsu.

Your preferred method of release: Kai, a minor prick or biting the gums, full body surge such as Doton: Domu. I think I would use Doton: Domu due to the defensive capabilities plus the genjutsu breaking skill.

Rate the technique out of ten: 7.

Questions about the technique (Optional): How big and how many blossoms are there? Other than that, it is straightforward.

I pinch the crap out of my inner thigh Ouch! and suddenly the Genjutsu is broken and the pond disappears, and Penguin reappears as the cherry blossoms dissapate. After examining my surroundings, I see a tree stump to Strawberries right. I then focus my chakra in Strawberries direction, messing with his chakra system, and suddenly he see's a Prince's throne where the tree log was, and I walk over to the tree stump and sit down, making it appear to him that I'm sitting in the throne.

Combinations you could make with this jutsu:I would make it appear as if I was using a different elememental attack, making them hopefully chose the wrong defense in the confusion

Your reasoning on why you would deduce it to be a Genjutsu: No sound or smells, plus Vegeta should have a King's throne U_U

Your preferred method of release: stomping on my own foot really hard (?)

Rate the technique out of ten:7

Questions about the technique (Optional):None, seems pretty straight forward

Next, I stand up and continue to mold my chakra and perform 5 handseals, messing with Strawberries chakra once more, and as he looks at me, I dissolve into a million cheery blossom petals completely blinding him while I jump out of sight.

Combinations you could make with this jutsu:This one could be combined with almost any jutsu, I could combine it well with some of the smexy earth jutsu's I've been learning

Your reasoning on why you would deduce it to be a Genjutsu: people don't turn into flower petals

Your preferred method of release: poke myself with a kunai

Rate the technique out of ten:7

Questions about the technique (Optional):None

Hmmm... A throne, where a stump was 2 seconds ago, this is genjutsu, as no sound for creation was heard and nor did i see any movement in that general area. I quickly bite my lip, ouch... noticing that vegeta is siting on a log.... I turn and face Tobirama, channeling my chakra out towards tobirama dirupting his chakra network to the brain, making him see a pit of lava appear in front of him.

Combinations you could make with this jutsu:
While the opponent is udner pressure and unable to think through everytihng properly change the field to your advantage as in make a swamp appear behind them, so that they will not want to go in that direction

Your reasoning on why you would deduce it to be a Genjutsu:
only visual change no sounds associated nor any physical feeling
Your preferred method of release:
slight self inflicting pain, bite of lip, small kunai cut
Rate the technique out of ten: 5

Questions about the technique (Optional)nope

Turning around again i see vegeta dissolve into cherry blossom feathers, they are blowing in a weird fashion... and towards me at that speed, without any help form wind.... I feel no wind, nor hear the slight rustle of it against the petals. I draw a kunai and slightly cut my cheek, isee vegeta walking towards me... what do you want?

I turn once more at penguin who seems to have gained his senses. I perform 5 handseals, while channeling my chakra into tobiramas chakra network, making him beleave i am disolving into petals masking my movement towards him.

Combinations you could make with this jutsu:
use it to blinden your opponent vision of you and launch kunais.

Your reasoning on why you would deduce it to be a Genjutsu:
movement pattern in correlation with wind, 5 handseals, lack of sound.....

Your preferred method of release:
slight cut

Rate the technique out of ten: 5.6

Tobirama sees the pit of lava infront of him, but does not feel any heat. He doesn't feel anything, or even hear anything, and as Kakuzu sensei said, it must be a genjutsu. Tobirama then takes a small senbon from his ninja pouch and pricks himself in the thumb, drawing a bit of blood.

As the pit of lava disappears, Tobirama watches Strawberry turn into cherry blossoms, a technique which Tobirama preformed less than 1 minute ago. The blossoms didn't smell like blossoms or make any noise, so it backed up his claims that this was a genjutsu. Tobirama uses Doton: Domu to break the genjutsu, as it is a full body surge.
