That shell of a former self nonsense Tobi said was just his way of convincing Oonoki that he is Madara. Oonoki questioned why "the great" Uchiha Madara was resorting to such a roundabout tactic and Tobi's response was that "empty shell" bullshit. Also, Tobi claimed that it was the wounds from his battle with Hashirama that reduced him to a an empty shell of his former self.

So...thats all Tobi meant by an "empty shell of his former self". There's no hidden meanings. It was all meant to deceive the Kages into believing that Tobi was Madara. And we all know now that Tobi is not Madara. Case closed.

Tobi was pretending to be Madara when he made those claims. Tobi never battled Hashirama at the Valley of the End. Tobi never sustained deep wounds that were dished out by Hashirama. All of these things happened to Madara, and not Tobi. If anything, Madara was reduced to a shell of his former self by the wounds Hashirama inflicted on him, and not Tobi.

Madara was the real empty shell, and not Tobi. Tobi is just a fake. None of those experiences he revealed belonged to himself. Those were all Madara's experiences and stories, and that includes the "empty shell" stuff.

The real Madara can topple mountains with one swing with his Susanoo. Tobi doesn't even come close to that power. In order for people to not question him being Madara he has to down play Madara power by calling himself a shell.

Tobi is not an Uchiha, his Sharingan never deactivates like Kakashi's, or Danzo's transplanted Sharingans that stay activated 100% of the time.
Sasukes sharingan will deactivate (even after receiving Itachi's eyes), because he is a Uchiha. ..

I do not believe that Tobi is the Juubi or any culmination of it. Tobi said that he wants to be complete, not complete again. There are other candidates better suited to be the man behind the mask, it seems Masashi wants the readers to become accustomed to the characters already presented in the manga and make correlations about them to find some lee-way if any. Masashi may introduce Tobi to be something entirely different then we believed, such as a concept, its speculation, but practical. It would certainly provide a better function throughout the story if he was indeed just a concept an idea, it would suit the reason why he calls himself no one.

Tobi may not even be human. One thing that is very similar between Tobi and Zetsu is they both can't use hand seals AT ALL. Tobi has never used them EVER neither has Zetsu. He has always relied on the Sharigan(S/T) to fight. Even with the Rinnegan he is pretty much doing the same. I think Tobi might just be the 10 Juubi.

Uhh I thought we all knew already that Tobi obviously is part Zetsu. That is like a fact, nothing special about that, don't really understand what the has to do with anything. Like Sarutobi said, Tobi obviously just said the shell of his former self to explain the fact away to the 5 Kages that he is not as powerful as the real Madara was thought to be, since he was claiming to be Madara. He didn't get injured by Hashirama, so that point is moot, that would have absolutely nothing to do with him not being as strong as Madara.

Tobi lies, he doesn't always tell the truth, he has lied many times. So you have to take everything he says with a grain of salt. Most of it was obviously lies, since he wanted people to believe he was in fact the real Madara. Now that everyone knows he is not, maybe he will start telling some real facts, instead of the fantasy he created for himself.
