It's highly probable that Rin was the impetus for Obito turning down the road of evil. However, there's likely additional motivation for him to have gone to the extremes he has.

I for one don't have a problem with his craziness being based on Rin dying, he loved her. I think people forget how simple things like LOVE can cause badddd things.
