Now I know there will be flames toward this thread that will be worse than Amaterasu, but just hear me out for a minute. Based upon my reading of the latest Naruto chapter (590), I have concluded that Tobi quite possibly may not be an Uchiha. I have seen numerous threads based upon people being convinced that Tobi has to be an Uchiha, which is completely understandable. On page 11, Itachi does state that only Uchiha know of "The Secret Stone inside Nakano Sanctuary" and that "Only Uchiha know that place", creating the inference that Tobi MUST BE an Uchiha. Tobi then states that "You probably know that I'm an Uchiha", confirming the reader's suspicion that Tobi "is" an Uchiha.
HOWEVER
I do realize that I could be completely wrong, but in taking note of Kishi's troll level of over 9000, I feel that Tobi is not simply an Uchiha based upon the way I interpreted the previous panel. The quote from Itachi reads, "You were able to slip through the Uchiha's defense and even look at the secret stone inside Nakano Sanctuary". He then goes on to say that "Only Uchiha know that place". What puzzles me, and leads to my belief that Tobi is not (necessarily) an Uchiha, is why would Tobi need to slip though the Uchiha's defense if he's apart of them? Tobi's character is very crafty and powerful, so he may have found the sanctuary based upon some unknown Kishi troll logic. As far as Tobi bluntly stating that he is an Uchiha, this could just be a lie to protect his true identity. At this time, it seems as if Itachi doesn't really know who Tobi really is, since he's observing his actions and trying to figure him out. Tobi could have just told him that he's an Uchiha in order to protect his true identity. So then where does this leave Tobi's identity?
My Ideas
1. Tobi's from another clan that rivaled with the Uchiha.
2. Tobi is indeed an Uchiha and could be as the story goes.
3. Tobi is an rogue ninja who was banished from the Uchiha clan.
4. Tobi is really Amon from the Legend of Korra. (I had to lol.)
