okay heres a theory i thought of (dont go flaming me)
okay so in like the first part vs zabuza sasuke says only a few uchiha awken the sharingan, so it coud be the same for the uzumaki and both clans were wiped out and each would have a strong kekki genkai which is why they would have been feared, so like sasuke awakened it in battle nagato could have done the same

Nagato wasn't just randomly born with it and can't remember what happened before / after the shinobi had been killed. Tobi tends to not lie on the highly important things, he spews lies out of his mouth but in this case I think he was being honest as there's no other explanation out there at the moment.

Untill we see Tobi Giving him it, It's still possible that it's Nagato's.

I personally don't think Tobi/Madara gave Nagato the Rinnengan literately. I think they must have implanted him with sharrigan eyes(Uchia dna or something) and/or then gave him the conditions to awaken it himself.

As I said I don't think Tobi literately gave it to him as he says. Maybe he was trying to experiment to see if he could unlock it then in the future reclaim it which he has done, he obviously has no intention of using Gedo Maze on himself which screwed up Nagato that's why he's using Sasuke atm since Nagato is gone. He was also around when the Akatsuki was founded but he remained behind the scenes for most of it.

dude we know sasuke wont get rinningan and plus when nagasto is revived he didnt need the gedo mazo and if he was experimenting why not keep the "experiment" close and not let it free roam like nagato did

if you are going to give it to someone it has to be a person who wouldn't know how to use it. if you give it to a shinobi you cannot control it he/she would just turn against you. but someone who doesn't understand what it is, is bound to obey you. that's why you choose someone who hasn't shown any skills.

and madara knew nagato. that pretty much means he has a hand in what's going on. and after ages a second rinnegan appears and in 30 more years a third one appears too? that seems too unlikely. the third (nagato) definitely has a hand behind it. whether it's handed or "forcefully" awakened.

by giving nagato the rinnegan I've never said that it's handed right to him. I think they did something to nagato and made him awaken rinnegan forcefully. - they made him obtain rinnegan and that also counts as giving him the rinnegan
