The chain was his way of utilising kamui to get the better of his opponents by letting them pass through his body and trapping them in chains, and essentially crush their ribs. Actually pretty smart and innovative way use of kamui. However his opponent also being a space time user, made it less effective.

Same thing with Torune and Fuu, Obito didn't know kabuto would join akatsuki.

Chains are not going to crush anybody, especially a s/t user kage. Obito didn't use chains to crush the mist shinobi's either, so chains against a higher level opponents? Logic

Substitute that chain with a Gubai fan, Fuma shuriken, or even a rod and you'll have a much more realistic fight.

The chains are better suited in conjunction with kamui, allowing him to incapacitate his opponent by fooling them with his phasing ability. After incapacitating them, he can just grab them and teleport them away with Kamui. I mentioned crushing them because I remembered it was the move he used to do in storm generations game, mixed it up with the anime.

Finally, who said anything about killing? He sends his opponents into the kamui dimension and places them in genjutsu. Since when do you need to kill to defeat your opponent. You're a complete degenerate, it was a realistic fight. It was space time ninjutsu vs space time ninjutsu. Any other physical attacks and techniques would have been a waste of time.
