Son Goku said the stake was what was binding his chakra to his Jinchuuriki's body. Why the hell would a stake be necessary to bind the bijuus chakra to the Jins body if he was a normal Jinchuuriki? Oh wait, he wasn't. The Bijuu are still sealed in the Mazo and they never left the statue.
