Tips for Running?

I just started running today with my brother to try to get back into shape a little bit. I've got indoor soccer on Thursdays now, so I don't wanna be completely dying. Anyways, what stops my sides from hurting after running for a little bit? I know to drink plenty of water (which I haven't been) and to not eat before running (which I did lol). So...what are some tips for running and how do I get my sides to stop hurting?

You need to establish a pattern of regular breathing when you run. Breathe in and out deeply, but quickly, (don't hyperventilate) at fixed intervals.

Nothing that you already don't know Lol. Get some water and try not to eat before you go exercise. Get you some potassium throughout the week and get a good stretch before you get going.

When it comes to running, you always want to have good form and stride. If you're trying to get some speed going, run on your toes, I've been told it helps and I think it does. Pump your arms as hard as you can and you'll be zipping down the soccer field. It's good to run throughout the week as well instead of days where you just have games, I used to get exhausted in games playing as a midfielder when I missed practice :)

well what I like to focus on while I run is consistency. I make my hands into a fist and I keep the swaying motion of the fist while I run consistent, this helps me pace how long I run for. Also stretching is always important. And don't drink too much water, very low amounts after you run, stuffing yourself isn't good. The last best tip is: Don't stop when your tired, Stop when your Done.

Yeah, just stretch/do a warm up, drink that water, don´t eat like a pig before running and control your breathing (that´s what may be causing the pain you mentioned).

Warm-up before you run. Also, no need to go your extreme limits on the first day.

Start by running a kilometer or so. Then, increase it after few days to 1 and 1/2 km etc.

Honestly stretching before running does little to nothing for you. The reason is because your body isn't warmed up and it's simply not doing anything for you at that. You can do a little bit for your hips, calfs, quads etc... to help the process but it doesn't do anything for your side cramps.

As for your side's hurting, you need to drink more water. You should be peeing clear about 20-30 min before you run. Aside from that it's a progression thing with running, if you don't stay on top of it you will always cramp in those areas because your cardio will lack in comparison to the amount of running you are trying to do. The first week or so you will have cramps but as long as you run on a consistent 4-5 day trend after that it will go away naturally. Also for eating, it's different with everyone. If you are noticing cramps it probably means you should wait about an hour or so before running.

Lastly after running make sure you spend 15-20 minutes stretching and around 10-20 minutes of icing on your joints/muscles to prevent injury. Personally, I'd just do an ice bath for around 6-8 minutes and that will do the job but its cold let me tell ya.

I've been running with my adhd mate for a couple of years now, and around 2010 we used to run at a fast pace for about 2 hours straight in mid-summer. Which is badass, but I don't think that was really good for our joints and such. You shouldn't run longer than an hour and a half.

- keep your elbows tucked and back straight. Swaying your arms too much costs more energy
- Keep your steps compact
- Don't eat food that's hard to digest. Like meat.
- Have a banana pre-workout. Not too much water. Just a few sips
- when you start running try to keep your heart beat at a low pace by controlling your breathing
- Listen to music that pumps up your blood. Get lost in thoughts so you forget you're running. I usually dwell in fantasy thoughts and wake up like 30 minutes later, realizing I'm running. Then I switch back into my zone. You last longer like that.
- Use good shoes! That's important. Shoes with flat soles can ruin your lowe back, achilles, neck, knees and the bottom of your feet.
