It's a yin yang relesase technique he learned from the tablets. When attack the sword didn't explode it just clash before the breaking apart.
I think he used it because of the size was big enough to handle Sasuke's susanoo sword.
It's just hard for me to imagine a bunch of these fused together makes that powerful sword, don't you agree?
