Threads stay open unless a Mod/Admin closes them. I think... :|

For a regular thread, a member of the staff must close it, there's no time limit or automatic closing for this. Usually threads are being closed by mods/admins if there's a rule breaking behavior/spam/or it contains a question that has been sufficiently answered.
You can also close/re-open your own threads if you have premium membership.

These two above... Also to be added that threads that haven't been posted in, in over a month, is classified as "dead," and trying to revive them will often lead to them being closed. In other words, just because a thread is "open," doesn't that mean that you can/should post there if the thread is years old.

You can also close/re-open your own threads if you have premium membership, but do not open a thread if it's closed by a mod even if you can.
