This war is pointless

If the goal of the war was to capture the 8 tail and 9 tail and tobi just needs some of the chakra of the tailed beasts, he has some of the 8 tails and he could of just asked Kabuto to revive kinkaku and ginkaku to get the 9 tails chakra and thats it what was the point of the war?

Tobi had no ideas what Kabuto had I'm sure he didn't know about genkaku and kenkaku at all he just got lucky

i was thinking the same thing. he already had the eight tails chakra, and obviously was saving kinkaku and his brother. SO he could have done is plan a long time ago, but then again....did he know kabuto had those brothers?

Tobi did not know that kabuto had the technique before he declared war and that he had the dna of the kin-gin bros. Nevertheless tobi wanted the full powered ten tails since it is stronger but if he couldnt get the nine tails and eight tailes in time he had a back up plan he formulated with kabuto's new assets.

Agreed, but I think the war serves as a distraction, so it's not entirely pointless from Tobi's POV.
If the entire Shinobi Alliance was fighting alongside Naruto at this moment, Tobi would most likely get defeated rather quickly and his plans would fail.

By using a Zetsu army and Edos, Tobi has managed to retrieve what he needed without wasting energy in fights, and he has singled out Naruto, Bee, Kakashi and Gai. Presumably, he can cope against these 4, as opposed to dealing with the entire shinobi army at once. xd
