This is why we can't understand true shinobi.

Selfishness.

At our most base level of human consciousness is the desire to keep what we love precious and safe. Many could never be Shinobi because we would hold our clan over the the needs of our village. Our society of today exemplifies people who put the needs of others before ourselves, but we as people cannot let go of the idea of our self.

This is why Sasuke would make a rubbish Shinobi to actually work for the village. His entire character is based around hate and vengeance. You want to know how useful that is? It isn't, because that makes you a wild card and those cannot be used reliably.

It is ironic. Our pop culture tells us to be individuals, don't fall in line, stand out from the crowd and don't let anyone tell you what to do. But what society needs is more people working for the benefit of the whole world, or in this case village.

Because they're all trying to be individuals. No goal, no ideals, just basic animal need for pleasure.

True that. If we followed the majority every step of the way, the human race would still be hacking meat with stone axes.

I agree with you that we need to coexist and work together for one another, rather than be selfish & greedy. But I think standing out is different from working together. It's more like being fashionably different. I mean this in the sense of materialism.
