Saying loose faith in humanity is a stupid saying. Some people suck, but loosing faith in humanity is a tad dramatic.

I hope all goes better for your mom's friend. It's a big shame.

Sadly, this kind of scenario isn't all that uncommon. Most employers can and will fire an employee whenever they feel like it, most times without giving a suitable reason. It's quite disheartening, especially when most companies don't care in the slightest about their employees' well-being or parenting duties.
This is not nearly as common as you imply.

The problem is that it is hard to find good people. College degrees are rapidly becoming as valuable as the paper they are printed on and the majority of younger people entering the labor force simply don't have the background that inspires basic employee integrity.

When the restaurant I was working at had to look at bringing in people to replace those of us who had kept the place alive (we worked there since highschool and through much of our college days and even part time after picking up 'main' jobs) - the difference in integrity between the average kid of our generation and a generation just eight years our junior was extreme.

Restaurant work comes with a considerable chunk of down-time - so you can chat, goof-off, play on the phone - whatever during that time. But when there's work, there are people counting the minutes to get their food - you get shit done. A lot of people don't understand that, for whatever reason.

Getting into more 'advanced' jobs, even the generation I am taking over for was relatively lax in terms of integrity. Books have been cooked in places, accountability is non-existent, and I'm beginning to suspect that the few 'loyal followers' of people terminated in the past have set out to sabotage those of us trying to straighten things out.

The types of positions that are in high demand are the positions where there is no one to babysit you and make sure that you've done everything right, that you are punching your time card honestly, or even that you have done the maintenance procedures that you say you have (no one else is going to come along and tear open the machine to double-check you).

Quite frankly - our society has entitled itself and displaced responsibility so completely that the overwhelming majority of people are simply incapable of functioning in those roles.

The job I got turned out to be a -whole- lot bigger than I originally bargained for. I could rightfully argue a 75% increase to my starting wage simply because of the scale of what's being done. "Fixing machines" is one thing. "Coordinating the reconstruction of a medical facility while un-****ing the log books and trying to figure out what is wrong with machines that have more hours on them than a car from the 50s with half the design integrity" is another.

It's not more than I can chew - just a bit more than I bargained for.

But I'm not going to get upset with them for my pay or my responsibilities. Because when this place is straightened out and things are running smooth, I'll be finishing out a degree and be able to pair that degree with: "See what I did in this place? Looks good, doesn't it? See the degree? Let your imagination run wild with what I can do for your business."

Or the economy will tank and I'll end up using my experience in water treatment to keep the community afloat. Win-Win.

The point is that it is hard to find people who actually care about doing quality work and being a part of the team. The people who do get a lot of lee-way on their shortcomings (unless they burden the group).

Though there is the political environment to consider. Sometimes good people are let go by inept people attempting to keep their 'throne' secure. That, or someone let the wrong accountants into the building (the ones that say "fire everyone before they are eligible for retirement" are the wrong ones - the ones that say "offer a thrift plan that employees can save for their own retirement" are the better ones to listen to).

I hope she finds somewhere better to work, or perhaps manages to pick up a decent work-from-home job. Having been through unemployment myself, I can understand how difficult it is.
One of the biggest challenges is that you have to be willing to 'look out of the comfort zone' - industries you aren't entirely familiar with, locations you would have to relocate to, etc. There are jobs out there, but they may not always be where you (or, she) are (is).

It's more difficult to start a business (trade or otherwise) in today's world with more regulations and licensing than the first five years' revenues - but that is always an option, too. Where there are people - there are jobs to be done. It's just whether or not the city council (or whatever governing body) will send the police after you for doing those jobs that causes the problem.

That sucks man, but that's life. You shouldn't lose faith in humanity, not yet. Things like this happens sadly, but what about her husband? Does he have work?

I dislike the phrase "losing faith in humanity," but yeah, that's a horrible thing to do to an employee and I'd be very disgusted too. (I am disgusted as it is, but I'm not personally connected like you are so it's not as deep)
