Itachi was the most impressive uchiha that Kishi introduced. The rest of them built off of Itachis image.

Honestly though, I remember seeing Itachi wreck three Jounin, back when you thought they were actually worth the hype. Seeing him take out Kakashi so easily was amazing. Weaving hand signs that quickly and ending fights even faster and making it all look so effortlessly. That was a hell of a introduction.

I agree, no one had an Intro like Itachi. Just when everyone thought Kakashi was the best. Itachi easily brought him to his knees. It got even better when Oro revealed getting owned by Itachi. I think Kishi really had not thought of making Itachi into a good guy, but everyone just liked him so much. Then it was hard to kill him. No one could. Great characters don't get killed, they die on their own terms.

I think there was a plan for this. Itachi always had a shroud of mystery around him, but there were moments it was clear there was another purpose for him. Like when Itachi hesitated giving information on Naruto, which stood out.

well itachi is a special character... he's one of the few characters who actually saved the manga... and he has a legacy that kishi wanted to maintain so i don't see how sasuke killing him would have made itachi a better character...

Itachi was very much an irregular shinobi... more often than not he was ahead of his opposition and when he wasn't he could easily adapt to changes (for example, casting Komoatsukami on himself post-mortem instead of having reserved it for Sasuke). Why is it that he'd have such a regular death? Anyways, it doesn't mean that since he died on his own terms he's invincible, rather it means that he's just really hard to kill and the only reason he met his death at the time was due to a serious illness and willingness to be killed (per his overreaching plan) that was more than likely a direct result of all the grief he had to bear throughout his years -- and I think it's fair to say that out of every Naruto character, Itachi was able to bear the most pain... not physical but a more profound pain that he lived every day of his life. A real tragedy; a tragic hero.
