I've seen many people debate where exactly this confusing Jutsu activated. Some have said it activated the first time Kabuto stabbed Itachi. Others, including myself, have said that it started the second time Kabuto stabbed Itachi, whichis how Kishi set it up to seem. Both sides were wrong.
The evidence to show that it started there is a bit subtle. First, Itachi says he will activate the Izanami, then he casts a handsign. This in and of itself means nothing, as Kabuto quickly bisects Itachi before the latter could respond.

I had thought that Itachi failed in activating it there and moved on, as Kishi leads us to believe. I was actually in the process of making a thread explaining how Izanami activates at a later point, until I found this:

Izanami starts recording when the user and the opponent have a shared physical experience.

The recording ends and the loop begins when the user and the opponent recreate that shared physical experience.

What was their shared physical experience?

Kabuto, on the ceiling, stabbing Itachi with Sasuke's sword.

That activated the genjutsu and placed Kabuto in a loop, where no matter what he does, he ends up on the ceiling stabbing Itachi.

I think Izanami was activated much earlier because this panel Itachi says it's already prepared ,if it wasn't ready wouldn't he have said I'm preparing Izanami? Then on the later panel It says the Kinjutsu is released .

Here you can see sasuke puts away his sword then in the panel later , you can see him throwing his sword but itachi eye is white from izanami ? if that were the case Kabuto would have still had the mind sealing control tag in his hand & sasuke sword would have been right were he left it.
