There are a few things I would like to discuss. Let me begin with my recent discovery of the events leading up to a certain scenario, now this is not backed by cold hard fact, but I will provide conclusive evidence.
I am talking about the time Itachi discovered Madara on his own. As good as Itachi was, I wondered how someone who was living in the Fire Country suspected the presence of another human being, a considerable number of miles away in another country.
That doorway behind Madara came to my attention, and his sentence"i was looking to rekindle the flames of war" did too. How would Madara be in a position to start a war with a another nation withthout any military power. The answer is that doorway
Madara was controlling the Yondaime Mizukage at the time, maybe in an effort to attack Konoha with the Mist's power. I however, am talking about Itachi's discovery of him, and this is the reason why I believe Itachi discovered Madara's presence.
This graduation exam sounded awfully similar to the ritual required for attaining the Mangekyo Sharingan. I believe Itachi noticed this and went with his gut feeling, that Uchiha Madara, the one with the strongest chakra among the Uchiha, who had abandoned the village and sought revenge ever since...... was the one behind the creation of this exam.
But eventually, the Mist found out, notice what Ao says:

In my opinion "the connection" was that they were both MS jutsu's. Only on that level should a Genjutsu be able to control someone strong enough to be a Jinchuuriki and skilled enough to be Mizukage.
I will make a seperate thread labelled The Truth Part 2, because the topics are unrelated. Let me know if you are interested in it, or I will not bother, it concerns Madara's connection to Danzo. I have significant evidence to support it.
