Personally I find one piece funnier and more consistent.
I'll break it down like this
Naruto=One Piece
One Piece>Naruto Shippuden
PTS One Piece>>Naruto Shippuden
Naruto lost a lot of it's original message when Shippuden came around. Part 1's main lesson was work hard believe in yourself and you can accomplish your goals. Shippuden comes and now it's if you're not Senju/Uchiha/Uzumaki get outta my panel chump.
All of Naruto's work from point 1 now seems pointless as he was destined to be an amazingly strong character due to his Uzumaki lineage and their Senju relation. Part 1's main villain was from an unknown clan and near immortal, part 2's two main villains are both Uchiha and said part 1 villain was beaten by an Uchiha twice(though he did come back from both)
The whole fighting style changed as well(as it apparently had to with the drastic increase in power that was being introduced in Shippuden, some will say this is a good thing I didn't care for it) part 1 had a lot more tactical elements to the fights and deception. Shippuden is about who has the biggest attack and can the enemies biggest defense stop it? When's the last time Sasuke used a chidori variant(the itachi fight?) or Naruto used Sexy no Jutsu(it defeated almost every jounin if not every jounin he showed it to in Konoha including the Hokage and a Sannin) heck Naruto hardly even uses shadow clone that much anymore and that used to be his main premise of attack. When's the last time someone dodged a near fatal hit with substitution jutsu?
The pace of Naruto has just changed too drastically for me to still call it my favorite. While the One Piece power has drastically increased the fighting styles have remained constant. Luffy still uses a lot of the same techniques, Sanji has remained a foot only fighter, Zoro has stayed to his swords etc. etc.
I agree fans can be very off putting with their avid admiration in fact that is partly what kept me from watching it for so long. That and the late 90's animation(which does get better) People talked it up so much and what they love about the show just simply can't be seen within the first 100 episodes it takes longer than that to build the connection with One Piece where Naruto establishes that connection within the first 20 episodes. Once you get to the point where the crew gets Franky to join though I honestly don't see how you couldn't be into OP.
