I agree in term of overall skill.
Boruto lacks the intelligence and skill to defeat him. However I dont think Shikadai is "stronger" than Boruto. But then again Boruto isn't that impressive in terms of chakra, which was ultimately his downfall.

I feel like Gentle Fist would always work against Shadow Possesion Jutsu though.

Shikadai still won, regardless. Naruto blatantly states that the Chuunin exams is to test the shinobi's strength, and at the time of the exams, Shikadai is stronger regardless of how you might think Boruto should've won because of his strength. I don't suppose strength alone should be used to measure how strong someone is as an Itachi is significantly weakened if he's to have Naruto's IQ.
