Yeah this was one of the best battles in the story, Sasuke was facing an opponent who was using powers he had never seen before. He analyzed his opponent, figured him out, came up with multiple strategies, and successfully did them, even while having Tobi around to think about, who was helping Deidara, and could attack at any moment.
While Deidara was attacking from the sky, Tobi placed clay land mines underground across the battlefield. Sasuke actually ended up using that against Deidara.
The battle was thoroughly explained by Sasuke at the end aswell. This was the most intelligent battle in the story.
and then practically of that tactical ability disappeared once he got MS....
Reread the Danzo and battle and chapter 674, once again Sasuke was in another battle facing high level opponents who were using powers he had never seen - Izanagi, and Limbo, Sasuke analyzed his opponents, figured them out, came up with counter strategies, and successfully did them.
Who could ever forget The Great Snake Escape?

Fans where angry about that one for a while.
Yeah that was cool, Sasuke forcefully used Sharingan Genjutsu to control Manda, and used him as a shield.
