George Joestar from JoJo's Bizarre adventure.

Probably the worst father in anime that's not meant to be a bad one. OK, quick summary. George is a rich guy that's the dad of the protagonist of the first arc Jonathan Joestar, and adopts a teenager named Dio. Dio, put simply, is a dirtbag.(and probably one of the best anime villains, and the villain of the arc)

Dio's plan, get this, is to ruin Jonathan's life so that he becomes broken and gets disinherited so that he can have the Joestar fortune. He does everything from spreading rumors about Jonathan to ruin his relationship to his friends, to traumatizing his girlfriend, to killing his dog because he looses a fight to Jonathan! Guess what?! George's personality was perfect for this! If it weren't for Jonathan's strong will, it would have probably worked.

George let's it all happen, and usually favors Dio. According to him, he was being hard on Jonathan since he's "his real son." But that doesn't change the fact that he was making Dio's plan so much easier. Dio's meddling with Jonathan apparently lasts for 7 years. 7 years, and he dismisses Jonathan's aggression as mere sibling or boyish rivalry.........for 7 years. 7 years, he doesn't realize that maybe, Jonathan needs support and not correction. This guy's just an idiot that lives in his own world.

Deadman Wonderland doesn't work as a show if Ganta was some sort of sultry cliche badass. If he's anything less than a real kid in this horrible, horrible world- he's not as sympathetic and the whole nature of the show sorta fails to capture you. Just sorta turns it into another general anime. Also see: Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Eh. Not every character needs to undergo a Walter White / Light Yagami / Lester Nygaard transformation.

He keeps his innocence. He won't let the prison actually turn him into a tough, horrible person to survive. He wants to survive, but for pure reasons- to protect people he cares about. That's refreshing to me.

Also he's not always a Pu**y. Shinji Ikari is a muuuch better example of a whiney, suicidal character unfit for his role as main character but he's superbly written haha, creating a real different tone of story. Gunta is the same IMO

Deadman Wonderland is not some epic fight survival story. The whole set-up is actually overwhelmingly pathetic. Every character is there to be slowly humiliated and degraded, it's a slow pathetic climb of a show, yknow? That's it's atmosphere. Good though.

Never said he had to. I would just like that he not be inadequate. For instance, Spiderman and Iron Man are both sympathetic characters, but they either have strength, or obtain it. He never really does, which kind of makes him an unprogressed mess.

Fair do's. I think he kinda works. Spiderman and Iron Man aren't in a literal hell and to survive that without whining and pure intentions I think you absolutely have to become an animal when it comes to jail. Especially this one.

So good but so amazingly pathetic, he's suicidal throughout most of the series. Oedipus complex, daddy issues, cowardice, adam&eve parallels. He's such a mess hahah but he gets a lot of hate for it? Just wanted to make sure you weren't doing the DBZ 10 year old thing of: 'this guy isnt strong and is sad/scared/pathetic like real people are, which makes him dumb' thing bc people do that so much with anime D:
