Pretty sure he's canon as 123FIRE said so, they just didn't have enough time to add him there. They might make him appear in a flashback or something that happened behind the scenes.

Technically, he wasn't since he never got implemented into the movie/manga but now, he's gonna be canon in the anime or at least when it comes to the anime, he is.
