I understand why the thread starter believes Kiba would be a good main character. We are talking about the main character in a Shonen Jump manga. Most main characters fit the archetype of brash, loud, somewhat clumsy, but overall warm hearted and honest. For every team there is a character like this. On team 7 it's Naruto, on team 8 it's Kiba, on team 10 it's.. let us forget about team 10 and skip to team Gai, who has Rock Lee as a potential candidate. All of them also have "cool, naturally talented" rivals on their team, in addition to an appropriate heroine. These are Jump manga potential main characters.

If we are trying to have a more seinen oriented manga, then I think that a good candidate for main character is a more flawed Itachi. I am referring to an imaginary Itachi that does fight people at his level, does suffer wounds, but maintains the same background. For example, if we have Itachi's manga rivals being Kakashi (who would be as strong as him, or better skilled in another area) and Tobi (with Tobi fulfilling the role of the second in command who is actually stronger than his superior) this would be an interesting manga.
