In light of Caitlyn Jenner's very public transition, she was awarded ESPN's Arthur Ashe award for the courage that was needed to make the transition due to the heavy spotlight that surrounded her. Not too long after it was announced that Jenner was receiving the award, many reacted negatively to the fact that she won the award over a veteran who lost an arm and a leg, with the veteran being the runner-up.

The statement came one day after a photo circulated on the internet that said that Jenner had won the Arthur Ashe Award over disabled Army veteran Noah Galloway.
There was only one problem with the photo: it was blatantly incorrect.
ESPN confirmed to CNNMoney that there is no such thing as "runner up" for the Arthur Ashe Award.
The network's statement on Wednesday went into further detail on how the network chooses its recipients by saying the award is meant to honor people "whose contributions transcend sports through courageous action."
"Sometimes that courage is demonstrated over the course of a lifetime and sometimes it is demonstrated in a single act that shines a light on an important contemporary issue," the statement read. "At all times, there are many worthy candidates."

"This year, we are proud to honor Caitlyn Jenner embracing her identity and doing so in a public way to help move forward a constructive dialogue about progress and acceptance," ESPN said.

So she won because her issues are more contemporary when compared to the age old conflict of war.

I mean, if veterans are even counted, they'd have to pick a veteran every time right?

This.

Even if there were no "runner-ups" There are several people more empowering than him that could have received the award. I could literally google a case right now that would have a recipient better qualified for the award than.

What's so ****ing courageous about turning into a women? People's judgement over you ? I'm sorry but in world where rights are everywhere , and especially in america, that should be no problem. Well, unless you're so insecure to the point that you do actually care about people being disgusted about you, which then means that you need help from a psychologist, not a surgery to change your gender. Burce made it clear that he always had that female side and that he was waiting for it to come out, meaning he waited till homosexuality and gender bending became bit tolerated among the community in order to change, which is pretty pathetic and smart actually, but no way near courageous .

Oh is that so? So basically I was fighting against laziness ever since I was young, but now I finally able to do my work without any laziness thanks to my outstanding courage, I mean shit, it made an impact on people around me and made them more considerate.

But where my award at?:lol such bullshit.

Who cares if there wasn't an actual runner-up, the arm veteran and a butch of other people probably deserved it more than Bruce. It's not like he's the first person to ever become a tranny or anything.

I agree and disagree with you.

First I think you are severely undermining the stress and fear associated with coming out as gay bi or trans. It's very difficult, especially when you aren't sure if who you are is even right, after possibly going through years of internal struggle trying to force yourself to change after being called trash by the world and abused.

However I agree it doesn't deserve a reward that much though. This person was too cowardly too come out until it was a lot safer. They knew long ago what they were. Has they just discovered it may have been different, but as a spotlight wealthy celebrity, they had little to worry about. What they did was courageous... But I can think of better easily.

Yeah this is also true. Why Bruce of all people? I went to school last year with a trans. They came out in high school and faced a lot of discrimination, but this safeguarded wealthy celebrity is a hero.

Just no.

But then there's very very very cool person who is labeled as psychologist most of time, he/she can help you understand yourself better, and once you realize that you're 100% positive that you want a surgery to change your gender, then do it. Not when you been in closet for 40+(he's older than that right?) and waited for the right moment to be "brave". I honestly don't really care, the world isn't fair. That's why this kind of shit is happening, though I'm more disgusted at people not realizing that.

I think it just comes down to bring a chance to glorify a celebrity to start a movement. Trans people are largely forgotten as a part of the lgbt community so they used this as a chance to represent them. Which is good intentioned... But still unfair. He honestly didn't deserve the award.

Agreed, Him being a celebrity had a major effect on how people viewed it.

So wait, we're giving people awards for paying a shit ton of money and changing gender? Why? It sounds incredibly stupid to me.

And yeah, I know Trans get hate a lot but I still think it's idiotic.

Everybody acting like they actually care about what's going on in the world but come next Wednesday or Thursday ya'll would have been forgotten about this steaming pile of Shart.

Something interesting is the spike in views of Tranny Porn, some of yall disguising your lust for BJ/CJ as disgust.

I support her transition but it was never that serious for a award.

There was a runner up and, honestly, true winner and it's Mother.
