This is under the assumption that Tobi is Obito.

Tobi (Obito) has the unconscious desire to be around men. Though he lacks confidence in expressing it consciously, his fear of rejection from other people because of his sexual preference, has caused him to wear a mask and hide his true identity.

There are multiple times within Naruto, that we see this play out as a form of subservience to males in authority and superiority. Firstly, Tobi becomes subservient to Deidara because he sees Deidara as his master through which he calls him Deidara-senpai. Tobi's fear of rejection was caused by the poor treatment of him by his original teacher The Fourth Hokage. The master plays the leading role in the relationship and so the hierarchical structure where males dominate, satisfies Tobi's unconscious desire to be around men. Thus Deidara plays the role of the dominant male in the relationship and orders Tobi around, as the common term arises "Tobi is a good boy".

Secondly, this wish for a male dominant structure where there are those males in power and those males who are not is also shown when Tobi fakes his identity as Uchiha Madara. Tobi's wish for a world with no war, no peace alludes to the fact that what he really wants is a world which he is in control. Where he does not need to hide his identity anymore and where his sexual preference can reign free.

One can point out that, the reason why he never revealed Kakashi his true identity is because he finds Kakashi, whom he feels closest too, attractive. As evident from his first time going to the ninja academy, he sees Kakashi first walking out but then Rin quickly interrupts and gives him the Ninja Academy introduction papers. This is Tobi's first point of failure, and so it caused him to not look optimisticly to telling other guys that he is interested in them. Tobi gives up and instead tries a relationship with women, such as Rin. However this fails too, and he ends up dying before he could reveal his true feelings to them.

Thus this melancholy, hiding identities, and unconscious desires are what make Obito into the Tobi today.

Well at least its a theory that has evidence. Its not like those outrageous theories, this one seems plausible. But yeh, I'm betting on members of the community to make really cool and weird theories that makes sense.
