Good find, The Sage was said to have ben a Priest or Monk and in accent times they exorcise Demons and sealed away evil spirits from areas that people wanted to settle in that were occupied by Demons. So the Sage doing His work would probably ask Himself Is their a better way to do this? And that would lead to Him experimenting on what works.

Just something I think I'd like to correct about some wording,about how you say the rikudou was an uzumaki. The proper way, I think, would be to say is that uzumakis are more closer in terms of DNA than the senju when it comes to their relation to the so6p

I think Rikudou Sennin was part of the Uzumaki Clan(non-shinobi) even before he discovered ninjutsu, it was only when he discovered the nature of chakra and ninjutsu that he taught it to his clan-members (Fuuinjutsu) thus becoming the Uzumaki Shinobi Clan of the present era, afterwards Rikudou set out on his own and travelled to teach ninjutsu and the way of peace all over the world.

I believe the present day Uzumakis (what's left of them at least) are "cousin clans" of the Uchihas and Senjus, their ancestors were either cousins/nephews/uncles of Rikudou Sennin, the direct descendant of Rikudou would be the Uchihas and Senjus only.

That would be a double edge sword on one end because he has unlimited chakra, the Rinnegan that gives him access to ever nature type, and the Rinnegan makes it 100x easier for him to create any jutsu especially when he has access to 6 Paths. He was set to change the world with that kind of mixture of power.

Being a priestly clan is a possibility but I don't think that they were all that quite being as they were known for being very ruthless and aggressive when it comes to their Fuinjutsu.
