The Sage of Six Paths
We all know this bad boy. The creator of the ninja world, the one who discovered chakra, the one who defeated the Juubi and became the Ten Tails host. We all know the tale that happened when he neared his death - his younger son had the throne passed on to instead of the elder son and then he died and the Uchiha Clan Ancestor cried in the corner etc.
We look at this as a form of showing, even the strongest could die but we also know this little guy as well.
Uchiha, Madara
We also know this guys tale as well. He fought Hashirama at the Valley of the End and after his presumed loss he escaped into hiding and with Senju DNA awakened the Rinnegan once again, summoned Gedō Mazō and used his chakra as a life support system to stay alive and then Obito appeared etc.
So Madara using the Gedō Mazō extended his life way beyond normal from attaining chakra. Remember: This is essentially the Ten Tails Chakra.
If Madara was able to extend his life enormously using a shadow of the Juubi - the Sage of Six Paths should have been damn near immortal.
To start I want you guys to look at these two people.
The Senju Clan Ancestor
The Uchiha Clan Ancestor
Alright assuming Naruto has some similarities to the real world, lets assume that the fertility of a human ceases at the age of 50. So the Sage had the two children before the age of 50. Let us assume he was 49 when he impregnated his wife with the Senju son. So let us say that the Senju son is 30 for more arguments sake.
30+49= 79
He was 79 in his death bed at most. However does this make sense? How can a man with near infinite chakra die if Madara survived using that same chakra? Simple the Juubi's chakra has very ill effects on a man. It for one probably was the reason why the Uchiha have such hate boiling in them so imagine having it in yourself for 10+ years.
I think that the Sage of Six Paths knew what the Juubi has done to him - he could essentially live for a VERY long time if he maintained his status as the Juubi host but chose to split the Juubi's energy into different beasts in an attempt to make sure such evil never returned.
He probably did something done his genetic line up as well to make sure the Rinnegan never returned.
He planned his death - this wasn't a natural death. He wanted to die in an attempt to vanquish evil from the face of the Earth.
