This is just a theory I've been cooking up and I just wanted to get some thoughts on it.
Now, to start,
The Rinnegan and Sharingan were each originally abilities of the Juubi with wildly different characteristics.
Looking at the properties of the Rinnegan, we have release of all 5 elemental types, the six paths, Deva, Animal, Human, Naraka, Preta and Asura. Gravity manipulation through Deva, adding life through Animal, gaining knowledge through human, restoration through Naraka, absorption through Preta, and augmentation through Asura. The 5 elemental releases would obviously be a helpful tool in creation. Each ability we have seen from the Rinnegan could be very useful in creation, addition or gaining understanding.
Looking at some of the Sharingan's Mangekyo properties, there's Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, Susano'o, Kamui, and Koto Amatsukami. The most destructive Ninjutsu through Amaterasu, destruction of the mind through Tsukuyomi, a being of destruction in Susano'o, subtraction through Kamui, and mind control through Koto Amatsukami. Each ability has use in destruction, subtraction or corruption.
The Rinnegan is the eye of creation and purity, while the Sharingan is the eye of destruction and corruption. Each from the Juubi. I believe that the Juubi could have been the creator of the planet, as Kurama's assertion of the Juubi being the source of all chakra would make a lot of sense if it were.
It would also make sense that the Juubi is a mirror of the world and it's people. When there is peace, the Juubi is at peace, when there is war, the Juubi is at war. This would also mean the Sage would have obtained the Rinnegan through purifying and sealing the Juubi, for this reason the elder of his sons' thirst for power and corruption is what lead to the Uchiha inheriting the Sharingan as opposed to the Rinnegan.
The only chink I can seem to find is Madara. I'm still unsure of how he would have awakened the Rinnegan. He does seek peace in a way but through destruction.
