The Man you have come to know as the saviour of this world is this world the eyes are not his the rinnegan is the juubi's eyes originally
^^ that is the demon eye the original i imagine the tentails was a supernatural being was immense god like ablities all of the rinnegan abilities
Soul sucking, summoning of demons ( most likely legions of the ten tails Such as the never dying dog and the chameleon any beast that has the eyes of the rinnegan.) Sucking up chakra/nature force, killer weaponary, push and pull anything, etc.
I would assume that the more crushing and equally as demon would be the sharingain
Super genjutsu ( such as tsukiyomi to put you in a world of nightmares very demon like.) , Manifistation of chakra to form demon like features ( susanoo) , the flames of hell that never burn ( Amateratsu.)
It all makes sense most abilities of the rinnegan and sharingain are very demon like and monsterous
Now the sage

Did not fight the Ten tails using rinnegan most likely are fighting with the juubi for a long period of time and getting hit by most of his attacks the power manifested into a lesser version of the juubi's eyes the Rinnegan then with the sages many sealing techs sealed the ten tails, but then later using his rinnegan and immense power he split the power of the juubi's ( his soul) into the 9 beasts.
Now this is alot i know but go with me
now the last thing i will explain is the byakugan the recessive gene the less demonic eye the controlling eye which is the sages recessive eye while the rinnegan and Sharingain are dominant.

Conclusion:
* Eyes were Juubi's not sages
* The byakugan are recessive and overtime became not as important as Sharingain and rinnegan whose two eyes were killer demonic.
* The sage used sealing techs not ninjutsu while fighting juubi and later on gained Rinnegan from juubi after fighting it for so long.
