I found out something just recently, which happened back in Part 1, but it was very interesting. So here are the pictures:
This is a shot of Pain Nagato's Rinnegan as it was shown at the end of Part 1, after Naruto and Sasuke's fight at the Valley of the End. As we all know, this was the first ever depiction of the Rinnegan in the anime, but that's not the most important part. Take a look at the second picture:
This is the Uchiha Clan ancestor, the Sage's elder son. When you look closely, the first depiction of the Rinnegan in the Anime is completely identical to this guy's Doujutsu. After all this we can assume that the Rinnegan is NOT the final stage of the Sharingan, and that it can evolve into the Sage's elder son's eyes at some point, because look at this:
Pain's first ever Rinnegan is exactly the same in the last manga panel of Part 1, which means that my theory CAN be true somehow, though in Shippuuden the Rinnegan was never presented like that again. It's sure about 400 chapters back in time, but it's a very interesting discovery. Don't you think? Not sure if this wasn't posted already though...
