Good theory. I think it's definitely posssible that he could use the gates.. Or even calorie control. lol. But these are just speculations/thoeires at best.

It's highly likely that hiruzen can open up at least 3 gates.

-> He's very strong, capable of lifting enma which is said to be heavy.(he's weaker in old age)
-> He's very versed in taijutsu/kenjutsu able to push back oro and best him in a CQC matchup
-> He's most likely trained heavily with monkey king enma which would explain his increased agility.

All in all, the high level of taijutsu and strength imply he did a lot of heavy traning just like guy and lee. Seeing as kakashi himself can open 1-2 gates, there's no reason to believe hiruzen can't open 1 or 2. It's highly likely that all hokage can pop open at least the 1st gate but they don't do it because of the ridiculous exhaustion that follows it.
